Sampling-Distribution-of-Sample-Mean-1.1-kyle

The document explains the concepts of random sampling, statistics, parameters, and sampling distributions of sample means. It outlines the steps to compute sampling distributions, including identifying populations, listing samples, calculating sample means, and determining probabilities. Sampling Distribution of
Sample Means
A sampling distribution of sample means is a
frequency distribution using the means
computed from all possible random samples
of a specific size taken from a population.
The means of the samples are less than or
greater than the mean of the population.
Steps to solve the sampling
distributions of the sample mean

Step 1: Identify the Population and Sample Size

• Determine the population from which the
samples are drawn.
• Identify the size of each sample (denoted as
n).
• Determine if sampling is with replacement or
without replacement.
Step 2: List All Possible Samples
• Generate all possible samples of the given size from
the population.
• If sampling is with replacement, combinations may
repeat.
• If sampling is without replacement, each sample
contains unique elements

Step 3: Compute the Sample Means

• For each sample, calculate the sample mean using the
formula:
where:
• X represents the values in the sample.
• n is the sample size.
• Record the mean for each sample.

Step 4: Find the Frequency of Each Unique

Sample Mean
• Count how many times each unique sample
mean appears in the list of sample means.
Step 5: Compute the Probability of Each Sample
Mean
• The probability of each sample mean is
determined using:

where:
• Frequency of Sample Mean = Number of times
a specific mean appears.
• Total Number of Samples = Total samples
Example: with
replacement
If you list all the possible samples of size 2 drawn from a
population of 3 with elements 2, 3, and 4 you will have 9 samples.
The table below shows the 9 samples and their corresponding
means.

Step 1: Define the Population and Sample size

• Population = (2,3,4)= 3
• Sample size = 2
• Sampling without replacement
Step 2: List All Possible Samples and Their Means
Since we are sampling with replacement, the total number of possible
samples is: 3x3= 9
Sampl Sample Mean
e
2,2 2.0
2,3 2.5
2,4 3.0
3,2 2.5
3,3 3.0
3,4 3.5
4,2 3.0
4,3 3.5
4,4 4.5
Step 3: Construct the Sampling Distribution of the Sample Mean
To create the sampling distribution, we need to determine the frequency of
each sample mean and convert it into a probability.

Sample Frequency Probability

Mean
2 1 1/9
2.5 2 2/9
3 3 3/9
3.5 2 2/9
4 1 1/9
Total n= 9 1.00
Example: without
replacement
A population consists of the numbers 2, 4, 6, and 8. Let us list
all possible sample size of 2 from this population and compute
the mean of each sample.

Step 1: Define the Population and Sample Size

Population: {2, 4, 6, 8}
Sample Size: 2
Sampling Without Replacement
Step 2: List All Possible Samples and Compute Their Means
Since we are sampling without replacement, we choose
unique pairs from the population:

Sample Sample Mean

2,4 3.0
2,6 4.0
2,8 5.0
4,6 5.0
4,8 6.0
6,8 7.0
Step 3: Construct the Sampling Distribution of the Sample Mean
To create the sampling distribution, we need to determine the frequency of
each sample mean and convert it into a probability.

Sample Frequency Probability

Mean
3.0 1 1/6
4.0 1 1/6
5.0 2 2/6
6.0 1 1/6
7.0 1 1/6
Total n= 6 1.00
Assessment!

1. A population consists of the values {4, 6, 8}. If all

possible samples of size 2 are selected with
replacement, list all possible samples, compute their
means, and construct the frequency and probability
distribution of the sample mean.

2. A population consists of three numbers: {2, 4, 6}.

If all possible samples of size 2 are selected at
random without replacement, construct the
