L.O. 1.4 DIFFERENTIATE INFORMATION LAYERS,
USER CHART LAYERS, AND EVENT GRAPHIC LAYERS
How Layers Work in ECDIS
• In ECDIS, layering is used to organize and display
various types of information in a structured
manner. Each layer serves a specific purpose and
can be turned on or off based on the user's needs.
Layer Composition
Base Layer:
• The foundation layer usually consists of the Information Layers that
provide essential, standardized navigational data.
Overlay Layers:
• Additional layers such as User Chart Layers and Event Graphic Layers
are overlaid on the base layer to provide customized and dynamic
information.
Layer Interaction
Visibility Control:
• Users can control which layers are visible, allowing them to view the
information that is most relevant to their current navigation task.
Layer Stacking:
• Layers are stacked on top of one another. The order of the layers
affects what is visible; for example, user-defined routes can be
displayed over the standard navigational aids.
L.O. 1.4 DIFFERENTIATE INFORMATION LAYERS,
USER CHART LAYERS, AND EVENT GRAPHIC LAYERS
• In an ECDIS there are different layers and graphics that you can use to
convey various kinds of information depending on your needs and
situation. Said layers are the Information Layers, User Chart Layers
and the Event Graphic layers.
Information Layers
Purpose:
• To provide essential navigational and environmental information that
helps in understanding the context of the maritime environment.
Content:
• This includes base chart information such as the geographical features
of the sea area, depth contours, buoys, lights, and other aids to
navigation. It also encompasses static information like administrative
boundaries, maritime limits, and other fundamental data.
User Chart Layers
Purpose:
• To allow users to visualize and interact with data that is tailored to
their specific navigational needs and preferences.
Content:
• These layers often include user-generated or customized data such as
notes and comments added by the user for personal reference, route
planning, waypoints, and areas of interest. They can be dynamically
adjusted based on user inputs and preferences.
Event Graphic Layers
Purpose:
• To display real-time or situational events that are critical for
navigation and safety.
Content:
• This includes overlays that show real-time information such as vessel
traffic, weather conditions, or alerts. Event graphics can also
represent temporary changes or incidents such as navigational
hazards, traffic alerts, or distress signals.
Summary
• Information Layers provide fundamental, static navigational and
environmental data.
• User Chart Layers offer customizable and interactive elements for
route planning and user preferences.
• Event Graphic Layers highlight real-time events and situational alerts
to enhance navigation and safety.
