INTRODUCTION
Intellectual Property Rights
(IPR) are legal rights that
protect creations of the mind,
such as inventions, literary and
artistic works, designs,
symbols, names, and images
used in commerce. These
rights give creators or owners
the authority to control how
their work is used and to
benefit financially from it.
Properties
• Patents - A government-granted right to protect an invention for a
limited period.
• Copyright - The right of an author to prevent others from copying
their work, such as books, movies, songs, and computer code
• Trademarks - A trademark is a sign capable of distinguishing the
goods or services of one enterprise from those of other enterprises.
• Trade secrets : Exclusive rights to use a secret, as long as it remains
secret.
What are software patents?
•Software patents can be difficult to evaluate because software is both an abstract concept
and an engineering product
•Different jurisdictions have different policies on software patents
What are Software copyrights.
Software copyright is a legal protection for the code of a computer program. It gives the owner
exclusive rights to the program's design, code, and structure.
•Code: Protects the source code, which is the readable form of the program
•Screen display: Protects the screen display of the program, including screenshots
It prevents unauthorized copying and use of the program, Protects the creator's intellectual
property, and Encourages innovation and creativity.

Who owns the copyright?
In India, software copyright is valid for 70 years after the death of the author
Word marks
•Words, letters, or numbers used to identify a brand, product, or company
•Examples include Nike, Apple, and Google.
Design marks
•Logos, symbols, or graphical elements used to identify a brand, product, or service
•Examples include the Nike swoosh, the Apple logo, and the McDonald's golden arches.

Sound marks
•Unique sounds or jingles associated with a brand.
•Examples include the Amul Doodh jingle "Amul Dudh Peeta Hai India«.
Trademark vs. Patent vs. Copyright
Trademarks
•Protect brand identifiers like names, logos, and slogans
•Identify the source of goods or services
•Prevent counterfeiting and infringement
•Must be distinctive and non-conflicting
Patents
•Protect new inventions, processes, or scientific creations
•Give the inventor or patent owner control over who can use the invention
•Last for 20 years from the application date for utility and plant patents, and 15 years from the
grant date for design patents
•Copyrights
•Protect original creative works, such as books, music, and art
•Grant exclusive rights to use and reproduce the work
•Cover both published and unpublished works
•Generally last for the lifetime of the author plus an additional 60 years after their death
