Need for Analysis
It’s mandatory to analyse the number of such research papers published during
last few decades which will show the progress of research in a particular
domain.
Several methods were employed to analyse such patterns, one such is
bibiliometrics.
It is concept of using statistical methods to analyse various books and other
media of communication .

“Biblio” means book and “metric” means a scale or measure.

It is a proven solution and numerous research fields use bibiliometric analysis
and its related fields to:

• find the impact of a particular research field (or)

• to obtain the impact of a specific research paper (or)
• to identify multiple works within a particular domain (or)
• to obtain the potential impact of certain researchers.
Questions to ponder

● Emerging areas in the chosen field? ● Key research contributors?

● Research gaps and future areas of ● Indian contributions to the global
research? research?
● Scope for industry involvement? ● Impact or productivity of GoI grants?

Bibliometrics

The term was coined by Pritchard in 1969. According to him,

‘”Bibliometrics means the application of mathematics and statistical
method to books and other communication media.”

Scientometrics
Scientometrics is a scientific field that focuses on measuring and
analysing the impact of scientific literature published in academic
journals.

It is the study of science, technology, and innovation from a quantitative

perspective.

The term was coined in 1969 by Vassily V.Nalimov & Z.M Mulchenko.
Global Trends of Research Productivity in Natural Fibre Reinforced Composites:
Comprehensive Scientometric Analysis

Journal of Natural Fibers (SCIE IF: 5.3)

An attempt is made to provide an overview of natural fibre reinforced composites (NFRC) literature by
employing scientometric and network analysis tools to examine 1143 articles extracted from Scopus
database between 2011 and 2020.

This study investigates the most influential authors, top contributing institutions and countries, variations
across publication years, co-occurrence analysis of keywords and emerging research clusters. Results
obtained through this study describe the real impact of the research published till date and its usage, also
it gives directions for new researchers who wish to perform research in NFRC.

This study is the first of its kind in this field and provides a landscape and future directions in NFRC.

VOSviewer
(A tool for visualization of similarities)
VOSviewer

VOSviewer is a software tool for creating maps based on network

data and for visualizing and exploring these maps.

VOSviewer version 1.6.19 was released on January 23, 2023.

The functionality of VOSviewer can be summarized as follows:

Creating maps based on network data: VOSviewer can be used to construct

networks of scientific publications, journals, researchers, research organizations,
countries, keywords.

Items in these networks can be connected by co-authorship, co-occurrence,

citation, bibliographic coupling, or co-citation links.

To construct a network, bibliographic database files (i.e., Web of Science,

Scopus) can be provided as input to VOSviewer.
Visualizing and exploring maps: VOSviewer provides three visualizations of a map

• The network visualization,

• the overlay visualization, and
• the density visualization

Zooming and scrolling functionality allows a map to be explored in full detail, which is
essential when working with large maps containing thousands of items.
Terminology
Items: These are for example be publications, researchers, or terms. A map normally
includes only one type of item. It is for example uncommon to have a map that
includes both publications and terms. Between any pair of items there can be a link.

Link: A link is a connection or a relation between two items. Examples of links are
bibliographic coupling links between publications, co-authorship links between
researchers, and co-occurrence links between terms.

A map normally includes only one type of link. Also, between any pair of items, there
can be no more than one link.
Each link has a strength, represented by a positive numerical value. The higher this
value, the stronger the link.

The strength of a link may for example indicate:

• the number of cited references two publications have in common (in the case of
bibliographic coupling links),

• the number of publications two researchers have co-authored (in the case of co-
authorship links), or

• the number of publications in which two terms occur together (in the case of co-
occurrence links).
User interface

1. Main panel: This panel

presents a visualization of the
currently active map. Zoom
and scroll functionality can be
used to explore the map in full
detail.

2. Options panel: This panel

can be used to make
adjustments to the
visualization of the currently
active map presented in the
main panel.
User interface

3. Information panel: This

panel presents descriptions of
items in the currently active
map.

4. Overview panel: This panel

presents an overview of the
currently active map.

5. Action panel: This panel can

be used to perform different
kinds of actions, such as
creating a new map, opening
or saving an existing map,
making a screenshot, etc.
Main panel

The main panel presents a

visualization of the currently
active map.

Zoom and Scroll functionality

can be used to determine the
area in the map that is shown
in the main panel.

Three visualizations are

available in the main panel:

• Network visualization,
• Overlay visualization,
• Density visualization.
1. Network Visualization
In the network visualization, items
are represented by their label and
by default also by a circle.

The size of the label and the circle of

an item is determined by the weight
of the item.

The higher the weight of an item,

the larger the label and the circle of
the item.

The distance between two journals

in the visualization approximately
indicates the relatedness of the
journals in terms of co-citation links.
2. Overlay Visualization
The overlay visualization is identical
to the network visualization except
that items are colored differently.

If items have scores, the color of an

item is determined by
the score of the item, whereby
default colors range from blue
(lowest score) to green to yellow
(highest score).

For example, journals colored blue

have an impact factor below 1,
journals colored green have an
impact factor around 2, and journals
colored yellow have an impact
factor of 3 or higher.
3. Density Visualization
In the density visualization, items
are represented by their label in a
similar way as in the network
visualization and the overlay
visualization.

Each point has a color that indicates

the density of items at that point. By
default, colors range from blue to
green to yellow.

The larger the number of items in

the neighborhood of a point and the
higher the weights of the
neighboring items, the closer the
color of the point is to yellow.
Bibliographic Coupling & Co-Citation Analysis
Co-occurrence

Co-occurrence is a concept which

refers to the common presence,
frequency of occurrence, and close
proximity of similar keywords
present across several websites.
Type of Analysis

Maps based on bibliographic data:

Create a co-authorship, keyword co-

occurrence, citation, bibliographic coupling
or co- citation map based on bibliographic
data
Co-authorship
Co-authorship links between researchers,
and Co-occurrence links between terms.

Co-authorship represents the number of

publications two researchers have co-
authored
