COURSE NAME: AWS CERTIFIED CLOUD PRACTITIONER-

CLF-C02
COURSE CODE: 23CC3010

TOPIC: GLOBAL INFRASTRUCTURE

1
AWS REGIONS

• An AWS Region is a cluster of data centers in a specific geographic

area, such as the Northeastern United States or Western Europe. It is a
best practice to choose a region that is geographically close to users;
this reduces latency because data reaches the users more quickly.
• Each AWS Region includes multiple AZs. However, each AZ is restricted
to a specific AWS Region. You can use multiple AZs within one Region,
but you can't use the same AZ across multiple Regions.

2
AWS AVAILABILITY ZONES

• An AZ is a standalone data center or set of data centers within a

Region. Each AZ operates independently, so a failure in one won't
affect others. In disaster recovery plans, enterprises use multiple AZs
to increase redundancy and reliability.
• AZs shouldn't be confused with AWS Local Zones, which are extensions
of a Region. Local Zones let you choose more specific geographic
locations, such as Boston or Los Angeles. They are not designed to
increase workload redundancy. They are valuable if your users are
concentrated in a relatively small area, as they help reduce latency and
meet strict compliance requirements.

3
4
EDGE LOCATION

• Edge Location is the Data Center used to deliver content fast to your users. It is
the site that is nearest your users.
• 32 Launched Regions, each with multiple Availability Zones (AZs)
• 102 Availability Zones
• 550+ Points of Presence
• and 13 Regional Edge Caches
• 35 Local Zones
• 29 Wavelength Zones for ultralow latency applications
• 245 Countries and Territories Served, 115 Direct Connect Locations

5
6
EXAMPLE

North America:
• The AWS Cloud in North America has 25 Availability Zones within seven
geographic Regions, with 44 Edge Network locations and two Regional Edge
Cache locations.
• Regions (Availability Zones):N. Virginia (6), Ohio (3), N. California (3), Oregon
(4), US-East (3), US-West (3), Central (3)
• Edge Locations: Ashburn, VA; Atlanta GA; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Columbus,
OH; Dallas/Fort Worth, TX; Denver, CO; Hayward, CA; Houston, TX; Jacksonville,
FL; Kansas City, MO Los Angeles, CA; Miami, FL; Minneapolis, MN; Montreal, QC;

AWS FREE-TIER ACCOUNT SETUP

• 12-Months Free: These free tier offers are only available to new AWS customers, and are
available for 12 months following your AWS sign-up date. When your 12 month free
usage term expires or if your application use exceeds the tiers, you simply pay standard,
pay-as-you-go service rates (see each service page for full pricing details). Restrictions
apply; see offer terms for more details.
• Always Free: These free tier offers do not automatically expire at the end of your 12
month AWS Free Tier term, but are available to both existing and new AWS customers
indefinitely.
• Trials: These free tier offers are short term trial offers that start from the time of first
usage begins. Once the trial period expires you simply pay standard, pay-as-you-go
service rates (see each service page for full pricing details).

8
• The Amazon AWS Free Tier applies to participating services across our
global regions. Your free usage under the AWS Free Tier is calculated
each month across all regions and automatically applied to your bill –
free usage does not accumulate. The AWS Free Tier is not available in
the AWS GovCloud (US) Regions* at this time.
• *The Lambda free tier is available in the AWS GovCloud (US) Region.
