LESSON 1 - COMPOSITION OF FUNCTIONS

The document discusses composite functions, illustrating how to find the composite of two functions f(x) and g(x) through examples. It provides step-by-step calculations for (f ◦ g)(x) and (g ◦ f)(x) using specific functions. Additionally, it demonstrates how to evaluate these composite functions at a given value.

COMPOSITE FUNCTIONS

Another operation which

involves functions is obtaining
the composite function of two
given functions.

2
Example:
If f(x) = – 4x and g(x)= x – 1, find:
a. (f ◦ g) (x)
b. (g ◦ f) (x)
c. (f ◦ g) (-2)

3
Let f(x) = – 4x and g(x)= x – 1
a.(f ◦ g) (x) = f[g(x)]
= 3(x – 1) 2 – 4(x –1)
= 3 (x 2 – 2x+1) – 4(x –
1)
= 3 x 2 – 6x + 3 – 4x+4
= 3 x 2 – 6x– 4x+4 + 3
= 3 x 2 – 10x + 7
4
Let f(x) = – 4x and g(x)= x – 1

b. (g ◦ f) (x) = g[f(x)]
= (3x2 – 4x) –1
= 3x2 – 4x –1

5
Let f(x) = – 4x and g(x)= x – 1
a.(f ◦ g) (-2) = f[g(-2)]
= 3(x – 1) 2 – 4(x –1)
= 3 (x 2 – 2x+1) – 4(x –1)
= 3 x 2 – 6x + 3 – 4x+4
= 3 x 2 – 6x– 4x+4 + 3
= 3 x 2 – 10x + 7
= 3 (-2) 2 – 10 (-2) + 7
= 3(4) + 20 + 7
= 12 + 20 + 7
= 39

Example:
Let f(x) = and g(x)= Find the
following.
a) f ◦ g
b) g ◦ f

7
