Data Base Management System

A Database Management System (DBMS) is essential for efficiently storing and retrieving large amounts of inter-related data. It allows for operations such as adding, deleting, updating, and retrieving data, which is crucial for organizations like universities managing student and course information. The document also discusses database concepts like records, fields, sorting, and indexing, highlighting the differences between databases and spreadsheets.

Data Base Management

System
Session - 05
Introduction
Database is a collection of data and
Management System is a set of programs to
store and retrieve those data. Based on this
we can define DBMS like this: DBMS is a
collection of inter-related data and set of
programs to store & access those data in an
easy and effective manner.
What is the need of DBMS?
Database systems are basically developed for
large amount of data. When dealing with
huge amount of data, there are two things
that require optimization: Storage of data and
retrieval of data.
Purpose of Database Systems
The main purpose of database systems is to
manage the data. Consider a university that
keeps the data of students, teachers, courses,
books etc. To manage this data we need to
store this data somewhere where we can add
new data, delete unused data, update outdated
data, retrieve data, to perform these
operations on data we need a Database
management system that allows us to store the
data in such a way so that all these operations
can be performed on the data efficiently.
Let us Create a Simple DataBase
What are the Records & Fields
A column of the table represents one field.
Thus, the above table consists of
five fields. They are admission number,
Name, Data or Birth, Gender and Telephone
number.
A collection of fields makes a record. Hence,
the above table has three records.
Data Base Field Types
Comparison of Database and spreadsheet
The comparison of database vs spreadsheet
plays a huge part in the daily operations of
many businesses. Understanding the key
differences between them is vital if you want
to make the best use of either or both of
them.
Spreadsheets and databases involve different
technologies, but they share some
characteristics. Databases generally involve a
higher level of technical processing.

How To Save A DataBase
Data Base Sorting
Sorting is the process of arranging the
records in either ascending or descending
order based on specific fields to make
reported data more usable.Sorting a table
would create a copy of the table in which the
rows may have a different order than the
original. Storing the new table would require
an amount of space similar to that of the
original table.
Database sorting are two types-

1.Ascending Order
2.Descending Order
The records of the following student_info
table are sorted based on GPA field in
descending order
Data Base Indexing
Indexing is a method that is used to improve the
data retrieval speed in a table of a database.
Indexing in database systems is similar to what we
see in books. An index could be created using a
single or more columns in a table and the index is
stored in a separate file. This file contains the
logical order of rows along with their physical
position in the table. An index file helps to quickly
locate and access the data in a database table. The
space required by an index file is typically less than
the space required to store the table. Unique
indices will prevent the table from containing
duplicate values of the index. Indexing would make
the data retrieval more efficient.
Assignment

2.Give the Two Examples.
3. Define DBMS.
4. Create a table which is suitable to enter
marks scored by the students in your class.
Include Admission Number, Name and the
Marks for subjects you study in this table.

5. Mention the most suitable data type for the
fields in Table given below.
