The Computer System

Understanding the Basics of

Computers
Introduction
• Computers were initially large machines
operated using vacuum tubes. Over time, they
became more powerful, driven by the
microprocessor.

• This lesson helps identify the basic parts of a

desktop computer and their uses.
What is a Computer?
• A computer is an electronic hardware device that
operates under programs. It stores, retrieves, and
processes data.

• Uses:
• - Typing documents
• - Sending emails
• - Playing games
• - Browsing the web
• - Editing media
Components of a Computer System
• 1. Hardware: Physical devices like monitor,
keyboard, mouse, etc.
• 2. Software: Programs like Windows, Linux,
Android.
• 3. Liveware: The user (humanware).
Basic Parts of the System Unit
• 1. Motherboard: Hosts CPU, memory, and
essential components.
• 2. CPU: The brain of the computer.
• 3. Memory:
• - RAM: Temporary storage for active tasks.
• - ROM: Stores permanent data.
• - CMOS: Stores BIOS settings.
• 4. Internal Storage: For user files and
applications.
How Computer System Processes Data
• Data processing involves input, processing, and output:

• 1. Input: Data entered into the computer (text, graphics,

sound, video).
• Devices: Mouse, keyboard.
• 2. Processing: Work done by the computer to
manipulate data.
• 3. Output: Results of processing (text, graphics, sound,
video).
• Devices: Monitor, printer, speakers.
Storage
• Storage types:
• - Hard Disk Drive (HDD): Internal storage.
• - Removable Disks: Floppy Disk, Compact Disk,
Flash Drive, External Hard Drive.
