Skimming
What is skimming?
Skimming involves running your eyes very
quickly over large chunks of text.
Skimming allows you to pick up some of the
main ideas without paying attention to detail.
77
Skimming
78
Skimming
How to skim?
● Note any bold print and graphics.
● Start at the beginning of the reading and glide your eyes
over the text very quickly.
● Do not actually read the text in total. You may read a few
words of every paragraph, perhaps the first and last
sentences.
● Always familiarise yourself with the reading material by
gaining an overview and/or skimming before reading in
detail.
79
Scanning
What is scanning?
Scanning is sweeping your eyes
(like radar) over part of a text to find
specific pieces of information.
80
Scanning
When do we use Scanning?
● Scanning involves looking for specific
information.
● You scan when you look for your favorite show
listed in the cable guide or when you are
looking for specific information on your phone.
81
Scanning
How to scan?
● Start scanning the text by allowing your eyes (or finger) to
move quickly over a page.
● As soon as your eye catches an important word or phrase,
stop reading.
● When you locate information requiring attention, you then slow
down to read the relevant section more thoroughly.
● Scanning and skimming are no substitutes for thorough
reading and should only be used to locate material quickly.

Scientists say the ocean makes people happier
Everyone knows a trip to the ocean is fun. We can splash in the water. We can play in the sand. Being by the water
makes you feel happy. The ocean is not just fun. Scientists say it is good for you too.
The ocean is good for your mental health. A person with good mental health is happy most of the time. They do not get
angry or sad that much. They are not afraid of things all the time. Many people have some kind of mental illness. They
feel unhappy, or angry. They are afraid of things they do not need to be afraid of.
Scientists wanted to find out if living by the ocean makes people happier. They studied the city of Wellington, New
Zealand. Wellington is next to the Pacific Ocean. Wellington is a big city. Only some people live near the ocean. The
scientists wanted to see if those people had better mental health. It turns out they do. They are happier than people in
other parts of the city. They do not even have to live right on the ocean. Just seeing the ocean from their house makes
them mentally healthier.
The scientists are still not sure why the ocean is so healthy. Is it something about water? If so, living by a large lake
should be just as good for you. The scientists do not know if it is. They have not tested that. Maybe water is not what
makes the ocean so healthy. It could be the "sound of waves," the scientists said. It could be "the smell of air passing
over the ocean." Maybe those things make people feel calmer and happier.
The scientists say cities should build more houses near the water. They say doing that could help. It might make more
people mentally healthy. Just taking a trip to the beach could help too. It would be both fun and healthy.

My School
My school doesn't exist anymore. The buildings were knocked down after being in service for 50
years. In 2012, Hartridge High School was renamed Llawern High School, and the history of all
us old boys and girls was lost. Llawern is now much smaller than it used to be. The buildings
now occupy a single site. I haven't been back since it was rebuilt, but the pictures look nice.
When I went there in 1968, the Hartridge school was known as one of the largest schools in the
country. It had 2,000 pupils, and had three separate schools: lower (ages 11-13) middle (14-16,)
and upper (16-18), and covered more than 40 blocks. We liked being close to the railway line,
and we were proud to have our own swimming pool.
Although it was good to have so much space, the physical environment was of little
consequence; what really mattered was what we learned. We were taught everything from how
to enter college to how to look after large areas of trees. We also took sport very seriously. At
school, we learned to believe in ourselves and we were taught that anything was possible. My
school was exactly that - teachers believed they could teach everything and everyone.
I hope they continue with the same educational system. Schools succeed when they have good
teachers and ideals. Don't think attractive new purple buildings automatically promote learning.
The gray, old school served us well because the people in it believed in the power of education.

Seaweed on Caribbean beaches
Many people visit the beaches of the Caribbean each year. They expect to (1)...... smooth, white sand and
beautiful water. Lately, Caribbean beaches are not looking too good. The problem (2)...... seaweed. A little
seaweed is fine. It is even good for a beach. These days there is just too much of the stuff. Piles of rotting
seaweed are popping up everywhere. The piles (3)..... terrible.
One particular kind of seaweed is causing the (4)..... . It is known as sargassum. Sargassum is one of a
group of simple plants known as algae. Sargassum has no roots. It just drifts wherever the ocean waves take
it. Sargassum has washed up on Caribbean coastlines for many years. It was never a problem before. Now
much more is (5)...... up than people have ever seen. Visitors are starting to stay away. Caribbean countries
(6)..... the Dominican Republic, Barbados and Mexico are beginning to clean up their beaches. It will take a
lot of work, though. Some sargassum piles are nearly 10 feet high.
Visitors are very important for the Caribbean countries. Many people's jobs depend (7)..... them. Beaches
are what the Caribbean is most famous for. If visitors stop coming to the beaches, many people here will be
out of work. Scientists are not sure why there is so much seaweed. Some think it is because the world is
getting hotter. Other scientists think the problem is caused (8).... . certain things people throw away. Some of
that stuff ends up in the ocean. (9)....... example, farmers use fertilizers to make plants grow. Some of those
fertilizers wind up in the ocean. Perhaps they are making sargassum grow very quickly. Either way, the
Caribbean has a big problem. Some visitors are not letting stinky seaweed ruin their vacation, though. They
are looking (10)....... the bright side of things."The smell of seaweed is terrible, but I'm enjoying the sun." a
visitor said.
