Lesson Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
Describe the types of projectiles
Determine the effect of varying the angle of release
on the range and height of the projectile
Use an online simulation to investigate the motion
parameters of a projectile at a variety of locations
along its trajectory.
Show appreciation on how projectile motions helps in
sports and in daily life activities.

Misconceptions

Some existing force and projectile preconceptions

that are WRONG
• The launch force keeps on acting on the object after it was
thrown.
• The projectiles maintains its motion due to the acquired
launch force.
• At the top of the projectile’s flight there is no gravity that’s
why projectiles start to fall.

Projectile Motion
Motion In Two Dimensions

We restrict ourselves to objects thrown near the Earth’s surface so that gravity
can be considered constant.
Projectile motion refers to the motion of an
object that is thrown, or projected into the air
at an angle.

The motion of a projectile is determined only

by the object’s initial velocity and gravity.
•Projectile motion is a combination of horizontal motion and vertical motion.

•The horizontal motion of a projectile is constant because no gravitational force

acts horizontally
Projectile motion applies to sports.
A projectile
moves
horizontally
with constant
velocity while
being
accelerated
vertically. The
result is a
motion in a
curved path.
An object projected
horizontally will reach
the ground in the
same time as an
object dropped
vertically.

No matter how large

the horizontal velocity
is, the downward pull
of gravity is always
the same.
Horizontally launched projectile
Horizontal velocity is constant. Vertical velocity is changing
due to gravitational acceleration..
Vertically launched projectile
The horizontal velocity component remains the same size
throughout the entire motion of the cannonball.
Projectiles

at
different
angles.

the horizontal. At the same time and from the same
height, a bullet is dropped. If we neglect the effects of
air resistance, how will the time the two bullets spend in
the air compare?
A.there is not enough information to determine this

hitting the ground first.
C.the bullet that is fired will spend longer in the air,
hitting the ground after the dropped bullet.
D.both bullets will spend the same amount of time in the
air, hitting at the same time.
