PURPOSE OF WRITING LETTER


A LETTER IS A WRITTEN MESSAGE
CONVEYED FROM ONE PERSON TO ANOTHER
THROUGH A MEDIUM. LETTERS CAN BE
FORMAL AND INFORMAL. BESIDES A MEANS
OF COMMUNICATION AND A STORE OF
INFORMATION, LETTER WRITING HAS PLAYED
A ROLE OF REPRODUCTION OF WRITING AS
AN ART THROUGHOUT HISTORY.
HISTORY OF HANDWRITTEN
LETTERS
• THE FIRST RECORDED HANDWRITTEN LETTER WAS BY PERSIAN
QUEEN ATOSSA AROUND 500 BC.
• THE STAMPED LETTER WE KNOW TODAY CAME INTO BEING IN THE
REIGN OF QUEEN VICTORIA IN 1840.
• BEFORE THIS LETTERS DID NOT HAVE STAMPS OR ENVELOPES AND
THE RECEIVER OF THE LETTER HAD TO PAY ON ITS RECEIPT.
• LETTERS WERE FOLDED AND SEALED BY WAX WITH RING OR HAND
SEAL.

BODY OF THE LETTER/CONTENT [2MARKS]
1) MINIMUM 3 PARAGRAPHS. There is no problem with the
paragraphs as long as you have addressed the content of the
letter.
2) No contraction to be used.
3) Use good language.
4) Do not neglect as what is being asked in the letter.
5) Be specific. Go for all parts of the question.
6) REMEMBER: Content marks are given from body only.
7) 2 marks: ½+ ½ + ½ + ½ ( minimum 2 points for problem and 2
points for suggestion)
