FAMILY
• The Rizal Family belonged to the “Principalia”
aristocratic town of distinguished families.
• The family was able to live well by the dint of
honest and hardwork and frugal living. They
get their liver from the farm harvested rice
corn sugarcane,they also raised pigs chicken
and turkey in their backyard.
BUSINESS
• Business : Dona Teodora -Rizal's mother managed a
general goods store and operated a small flour mill
and a home made press -They owned a carriaged and
a private library in Calamba.
• Francisco Rizal -owned a larged farm,where they
cultivated crops such a rice,coconut and sugar cane -
also he was a merchant /trader involved in the buying
or selling goods including rice and sugar -A estate
Administrator he managed other real estate holdings.

• Paciano-his nickname was Lolo Ciano
• Narcisa-Married to Antonio Lopez

MEANING OF NAME
• JOSE - Saint San Jose (St. Joseph - Patron Saint of workers)
• PROTACIO - Saint Gervacio Protacio, whose feast is
celebrated during June 19
• RIZAL - the surname adapted by the Mercados because of
the Claveria Decree
• MERCADO - given to Jose’s great-grandfather by their great-
great-grandfather Domingo Lamco 1731meaning market
• ALONSO - the middle name of his mother
• REALONDO - the surname adapted by the Alonsos because
of the Claveria Decree
RIZAL SURNAME
• Mercado was the real surname of their family which was
adopted b Domingo Lamco, a full-blooded Chinese and
Jose’s great great grandfather, in 1731.
• The family name Rizal was given by the Spanish alcalde
mayor (provincial governor) of Laguna who was a family
friend.
• Jose started using the name Rizal when the name mercado
was already at the bad light of Spaniards.
• Jose was the only one who used the surname Rizal, the rest
of them preferred to use their old name Mercado.
Childhood
• Calamba was located amid a rich cultural region in Laguna,
the lake province of Luzon, famed for coconut in the hillsides
and sugar cane in the valleys. It is enclosed between the
vast Laguna de Bay and the enchanted Mt. Makiling. It
endowed the area with breathtaking landscapes and
comforting nature that tenderly fondles the townfolk from
dawn to twilight.
• The Dominican Friars virtually owned the toqn of Calamba
and its haciendas at the time, hence, non-Spanish families
were only renting the lands they tilled and were subject to

• The system known as the “enconmienda” that left peolple
very vulnerable to cruelty and discrimination from the
Dominican friars, despite those cruelties, Calamba still
offered opportunities. RIzal himsef wrote a poem
reminiscing his happy moments in the town of Calamba,
entitled “Un Recuerdo A Mi Pueblo” (In Memory of My
Town)
• The house of the Rizal Family was one of the most
distinguished in Calamba during Spanish times. It was a
two-story building, rectangular in shape, built of adobe
Many Splendid Talents
• At 5 years old - he began to draw with a pencil without
any assistance.
• Uncle Jose Alberto - a fine artist, helped him develop his
innate gift for arts.
• Uncle Gregorio - a tireless reader, lectured his
foundation of success and Profound logic.
• Uncle Manuel - a sport and fitness enthusiast, helped
him develop his frail body by way of athletic drills,
martial arts, and physcial excercises.

ATTENDING ATENEO
• San Juan de Letran - on June 10,
1872, Paciaono accompanied Jose to
Manila. He took entance examinations
on Christian Doctrine, Arithmetic and
• Reading and passed them.
His father, who first wished him to
study at Letran, changed his mind and
decided to send him to ateneo.
• Upon his return to Manila with Paciano
and matriculated at the Ateneo de
• Municiapal.
Father Magin Ferrando - was the college
registrar who first refused Rizal as
according to him, Rizal was late and he
was sickly and undersize for his age.
ATTENDING ATENEO
• However, upon the intercession with
Manuel Xerez Burgos, nephew of father
Burgos, he was admitted and registered
• as
HisJose Rizal.was located in Intramuros,
college
within the walls of Manila.
• He boarded in a house outside
Intramuros, on Caraballo Street, 25
minutes walk from the college. The
boarding house was owned by a spinster
named Titay who’s owed the Rizal
(Mercado) family an amount of P300.
1ST YEAR IN
ATENEO (1872 -
1873)
• Fr. Jose Bech - was the first professor

• The system of education given by
the Jesuits at the Ateneo is
advanced from other colleges.
• Rigid disciplines, religious
instruction, fine arts, and scientific
studies are promoted.
• Student heard mass in the morning.
Class is opened and closed with
prayers.
• Students are divided into 2 groups
and they fight for position.
(1) Roman Empire consisting of the Internos (Boarder)
(2) Carthaginian Empire consisting of the Externos
(non-boarder)
• Each of these empires has its rank.
• Emperor for the Best Student
• Tribune for the Second Best
• Decurion for the Third Best
• Centurion for the Fourth Best
• Standard Bearer for the Fifth Best
• A student may challenge any officer in his empire, his
opponent could lose his position if he committed 3
mistakes.
2ND YEAR IN
ATENEO (1873 -
• Rizal repented having neglected his

studies in the previous year and so
he studied harder and gained
emperorship.
• He was classmates with 3 boys
from Binan.
• At the end of the term, he received
excellent grades and a Gold Medal.
• He undergoes private tutoring for
spanish lessons. P3 payment.
3TH YEAR IN
ATENEO (1875 -
1876)
• On June 16, 1875, he became an
Inteno in Ateneo.
• Fr. Francisco de Paula de
Sanchez - a great educator and
scholar, inspired Rizal to study
harder and write poetry. Jose
considered him as his best
professor in Ateneo.
LAST YEAR IN
ATENEO (1876 -
1877)
• He excelled in all subjects.
• The most brilliant Atenean of
his time, he was truly “the
pride of the Jesuits”.
• He finished his last year at the
Ateneo in a blaze history.
• March 23, 1877 he received
his degree in Bachelor of Arts
LAST YEAR IN
ATENEO (1876 -
1877)
• Being a child of a family of landowners, Jose
Rizal decided to study for a degree in Land
Surveying and Assessment at Ateneo
Municipal de Manila and graduated on March
14, 1877 with honours or sobresaliente
(excellent).
• In 1888, he pursued his passion for arts as he
enrolled at the Faculty of Arts and Letters for
a degree n Philosophy at the University of
Santo Tomas.
• He also enrolled Medicine Major in
Ophthalmology with the intention and desire
