Compression

MPEG-1, developed in the early 1990s by the Moving Picture Experts Group, supports CD-quality audio and VHS-quality video for digital multimedia storage and transmission. It includes three audio layers (Layer 1, Layer 2, and Layer 3/MP3) with varying bitrates and compression techniques, and video compression utilizes DCT and motion compensation. Applications include MP3 players, VCDs, and early DVD players.

COMPRESSION: MPEG1-AUDIO AND

VIDEO

PRESENTED BY: YOKESH.S

ROLL NUMBER: 22CS77
INTRODUCTION TO MPEG-1
• Developed by MPEG in early 1990s
• Supports CD-quality audio and VHS-quality
video
• Used for digital multimedia storage and
transmission
• MPEG Stands for Moving Picture Experts
Group
MPEG-1 AUDIO OVERVIEW

• Audio Layers: Layer 1, Layer 2, Layer 3

(MP3)
• Bitrate: 32 kbps - 320 kbps
• Sampling Rate: 32 kHz - 48 kHz
• Compression: Psychoacoustic model,
Perceptual coding
MPEG-1 AUDIO LAYER 1

• Basic compression format, least efficient

• Uses simple psychoacoustic model
• Higher bitrates (~384 kbps)
• Used in Digital Compact Cassette (DCC)
MPEG-1 AUDIO LAYER 2

• More advanced than Layer 1

• Uses sub-band coding and redundancy
reduction
• Lower bitrates (~192-256 kbps) with good
quality
• Used in Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB),
DVDs
MPEG-1 AUDIO LAYER 3 (MP3)

• Most widely used layer

• Uses Modified Discrete Cosine Transform
(MDCT)
• Supports 32 kbps to 320 kbps bitrates
• Standard for digital music, streaming, and
downloads
MPEG-1 VIDEO OVERVIEW

• Resolution: 352×240 (NTSC), 352×288

(PAL)
• Frame Rate: 30 fps (NTSC), 25 fps (PAL)
• Compression: DCT, Motion Compensation,
Quantization
• Bitrate: ~1.5 Mbps
MPEG-1 VIDEO - I-FRAME

• Intra-coded frame (Keyframe)

• Contains full image data
• Used as a reference frame
• Larger in size but essential for video quality
MPEG-1 VIDEO - P-FRAME
• Predictive-coded frame
• Stores only changes from previous I-Frame
or P-Frame
• Reduces file size by avoiding redundant
data
MPEG-1 VIDEO - B-FRAME

• Bidirectionally predictive-coded frame

• Uses both previous and next frames for
compression
• Most compressed frame, highest efficiency
MPEG-1 AUDIO VS. VIDEO – KEY
DIFFERENCES
• Audio: Uses psychoacoustic-based
compression (MP3)
• Video: Uses motion compensation and DCT
• Bitrates differ: Audio (32-320 kbps), Video
(~1.5 Mbps)
APPLICATIONS OF MPEG-1 AUDIO
& VIDEO
•MPEG-1 Audio: MP3 players, digital music
distribution
• MPEG-1 Video: VCDs, early DVD players,
early internet videos
