 What is Smart Transportation System(S.T.S)
 Problems in Transportation
 What are the features of S.T.S which is practiced in
the world
 The S.T.S status in India
 The various requirements of S.T.S in India
 Conclusion
WHAT IS S.T.S?
The term smart transportation system (ITS) refers to efforts to
add information and communications technology to transport
infrastructure and vehicles in an effort to manage factors that
typically are at odds with each other, such as vehicles, loads, and
routes to improve safety and reduce vehicle wear, transportation
times, and fuel consumption.
BASIC IDEA OF S.T.S
Smart Transportation Systems (S.T.S) intend
to add information and communications
technology to transport infrastructure and
vehicles in an effort to improve:
Safety
Reliability
Efficiency
Quality of means of transport.
PROBLEMS IN
TRANSPORTATION
• TRAFFIC CONGESTION
• FUEL CONSUMPTION
• ROAD ACCIDENTS
• LACK OF TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
• LACK OF VEHICLE TO VEHICLE CO-ORDINATION

• SOLUTIONS :-
FEATURES OF THE SMART
TRANSPORATION SYSTEM
Smart transportation technologies

• Wireless communications
• Computational technologies
• Floating car data
• Sensing technologies
• Inductive loop detection
• Video vehicle detection
• Probe & smart vehicles
• The incident detection centers
• In vehicle information & route guide
TECHNOLOGIES TO BE
IMPLEMENTED FOR ENVIRONMENT
SUSTAINABILITY

• Electronic road tolling

• Advanced driver assistance system
• Human machine interference onboard
• Vehicle to vehicle communication system
• Techniques to improve local air quality and reduce
global warming
• STS for energy efficiency
Smart transportation applications

• Electronic toll collection

Electronic toll collection (ETC) makes it
possible for vehicles to drive through toll
gates at traffic speed, reducing congestion
at toll plazas and automating toll
collection.
• Emergency vehicle notification systems
The in-vehicle eCall is an emergency call
generated either manually by the vehicle
occupants or automatically via activation
of in-vehicle sensors after an accident.
• Cordon zones with congestion pricing :-
Smart transportation applications
• Automatic road enforcement
A traffic enforcement camera system,
consisting of a camera and a vehicle-
monitoring device, is used to detect
and identify vehicles disobeying a
speed limit or some other road legal
requirement.
• Hot lanes:-
These are the roads where the speed
limit is more than 100 kms./hr. & goes
in one track. There are radiators on the
sides of the road where if the car goes
out of lane, it produces shocks &
hence keeps the car on the track.
S.T.S REQUIREMENTS IN INDIA
• Number of vehicles – Risen hence road accidents have also
increased.
• World’s highest annual road fatalities - 80,000 persons
killed on Indian roads every year.
• S.T.S India project –
• To improve road safety and the efficiency of transportation
systems.
• Close cooperation between European and Indian stakeholders,
defining key issues for STS deployment in particular,
Intelligent Integrated Safety Systems.
ROAD SAFETY IN INDIA
• Ownership of cars in India - 6 per thousand of population as
against 500 in developed economies.
• Number of fatalities per 10,000 vehicles - 14.39 in India,
compared to 1.0 to 2.50 in many high income countries
• Causes Of Road Accidents
• ➢ Driver’s fault -83.5%
• ➢ Pedestrian fault/fault of passengers -4.7%
• ➢ Mechanical defect in vehicles -3%
• ➢ Bad roads -1.1%
• ➢ Bad weather -0.9%
• ➢ Other factors-6.8%
• eg cattle, fallen trees, road blockages, non-functioning of
signals and
• absence of rear reflectors/road signs
S.T.S Initiatives in India
Several ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) planned – on NH-5 – Ahmedabad-
Mumbai Highway (RFID-based)
S.T.S on BRT Corridors – Signal priority , Vehicle Tracking and Automatic Fare
Collection in Indore BRT – Pimpri-Chinchwad (Pune)
S.T.S in Parking– APMS (Advanced Parking Management Systems) in Delhi –
Capacity to park 1050 cars and 500 two wheelers - Electronic Parking Guidance
and VMS Smart Cards – Automated multi-level parking
S.T.S Master Plan for Hyderabad –
Automatic Traffic Counter-cum-Classifiers (ATCC), CCTVs, Variable
Messaging System, Traffic Signals, Pedestrian Signals, Flood Sensors, Weather
Stations, Pollution Sensors
B-TRAC, Bangalore * –
Initiated by Bangalore Traffic Police – Components of B-TRAC Centrally
controlled traffic signalling system
Improved traffic regulation – Reduction in road accidents
BRTS ( BUS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM)

WHY BRTS ?
•An Affordable Choice
•Many cities are now choosing bus rapid transit for two important resons:-
•Cost
•Convenience
CHARACTERISTICS:-
IMPLEMENTATIONS OF BRTS IN INDIA:-
Existing BRT system with segregated lanes:
Pune - was the first BRT system in india. Currently uses low floor Volvo buses.
Ahmedabad – uses ashok Leyland semi low floor buses.
Delhi – uses tata macropolo bus.
Mumbai – uses king long , Mercedes and tata buses.
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

• What is Emergency Management System?

• Emergency Management has four phases:-

➢ Sense the type of emergency and the location
➢ Reach the victim with appropriate personnel and
equipment, as required
➢ Care for the victim as appropriate
➢ Feedback to enable audit and healthy evolution of
the system and its services.
TRAFFIC AND TRAVELLER
INFORMATION
• Variable/Changeable Message Signs -Travelers around the
metropolitan cities are being assisted with
Variable/Changeable Message Signs (VMS, CMS) and
dynamic route guidance systems for travel conditions and
directions.
• G.I.S information system -The Bangalore Metropolitan
Transport Corporation (BMTC) is one of the few public
transport agencies using satellite navigation technology for
fleet tracking and monitoring, and they want to upgrade their
systems to provide real-time information to their passengers.
ADVANTAGES OF ITS
• Improved safety
• Better traffic flow
• Lower travel cost
• Better environmental quality
• Increased buisness activity
• Better travel information
• Better planning information
DISADVANTAGES OF ITS
• Preliminary difficulties in understanding
• ITS equipments are costly
• The control system software could be hacked by hackers
CONCLUSION
Implementing the use of Smart Transport System will
definitely be going to affect our ride in a good way.
Information Services remain fundamental to passenger
satisfaction, which will encourage use of public transport
and reduce the use of personal vehicles.
This significantly contributes to saving the
environment from heavy vehicle pollution and reducing
congestion. At the end we conclude that S.T.S. holds a
good point in providing us a good, safe journey.
