• The Department of Health (DOH) and the
Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS) divides the
adolescence period into:
What is Special about
Adolescents?
• Adolescence stage is one of the most rapid and formative phases of
human development.

• Adolescence is rooted in the Latin verb adolescere which denotes to

grow or to grow to maturity.

• Apparently, there are distinctive physical, cognitive, social, emotional,

and sexual developmental changes that take place during
adolescence.
What is Special about
Adolescents?
• They also experience sexual awareness and gender identity.
• They also experience evolving cognitive ability.
• Adolescents are also concerned about their physical identity.
• Based on Erikson’s Psychosocial Development Stages,
adolescents face the challenge as identity versus role
confusion.
• They work at enhancing a sense of self by testing roles, then
combining them to create a single identity.
THREE STAGES OF
ADOLESCENCE
• Early adolescence
- Physical Changes: Children
experience rapid growth,
including hair growth under the
arms and near the genitals,
breast development in females,
and testicle enlargement in
males.
THREE STAGES OF
ADOLESCENCE
• Early adolescence
- Cognitive Changes: Concrete,
black-and-white thinking
dominates. Preteens may be self-
conscious about their
appearance and focus on
themselves (egocentrism).
THREE STAGES OF
ADOLESCENCE
• Early adolescence
• - Social Changes: Increased
need for privacy, exploration of
independence, and sometimes
pushing boundaries with
parents.
THREE STAGES OF
ADOLESCENCE
• Middle adolescence
- Physical Changes:
Puberty-related changes
continue, including voice
cracking, acne, and regular
periods for most girls.
THREE STAGES OF
ADOLESCENCE
• Middle adolescence
• - Emotional and Social
Development: Interest in romantic
and sexual relationships emerges.
Teens explore sexual identity and
may experience peer pressure.
THREE STAGES OF
ADOLESCENCE
• Middle adolescence
• - Independence: Struggles for
more independence, spending
less time with family and more
with friends.
THREE STAGES OF
ADOLESCENCE
• Late adolescence
- Transition to
Adulthood: Gradual
shift toward
independence, career
choices, and personal
responsibility.
THREE STAGES OF
ADOLESCENCE
• Late adolescence
• - Identity Formation:
Exploration of values,
beliefs, and life goals.
THREE STAGES OF
ADOLESCENCE
• Late adolescence
• - Emotional Maturity:
Developing coping skills,
empathy, and resilience.
CHALLENGES
DURING
ADOLESCENCE
CHALLENGES?

• Challenges refer to the unique

difficulties and hurdles that young
individuals face during this
transitional period. These challenges
encompass various aspects.
CHALLENGES?

• It is indeed a very challenging stage

because it is between childhood
and adulthood wherein
adolescents encounter changes and
challenges as they go deeper to the
journey of life.
CHALLENGES

1 - Attitudes and behavior toward sexuality and

sexual relationships.
2 - Academic Concerns
3 - Group Belongingness
4 - Health and Nutrition
5 - Developing or Regaining Self-Esteem
CHALLENGES

6 – Roles
7 – Material Poverty
8 – Career Choice
9 – Relationships
10 – Values and Beliefs
1. Attitude and Behavior
towards Sexuality and Sexual
Relationships.
• Adolescents begin to be familiarized in sexuality and
sexual relationship that results to experimentation
and exploration. Even though there are factors that it
can be considered as beneficial, still, there are
dangers that can be encountered when the control in
exploration was lost.
1. Attitude and Behavior
towards Sexuality and Sexual
Relationships.
- Pornography
- Teenage Pregnancies
- Sexually Transmitted Diseases
1. Attitude and Behavior
towards Sexuality and Sexual
Relationships.
Adolescent should see sexual relationship as a part of
loving relationship and not just for pleasure. Also, love
is not based on sexuality, but is based on how they help
each other to become a better person.
2. Academic Concerns
• Adolescents also encounter challenges academically.
Some students get difficulty with their studies and the
attitude that they have to embrace while studying.

• Academic Pressure
• Learning Gaps
3. Group Belongingness
• Adolescents start to be self-governing from their parents and
start to seek a substitute support that they see in the form of
social groupings such as friends and organizations in both
school and community.

• Adolescents should be aware that there are groups that are

healthy for them and there are groups that might lead them
to disturbing behaviors.
3. Group Belongingness
• Peer Pressure
• Addiction (Alcoholism, Illegal Drugs)
• Juvenile Delinquency
4. Health and Nutrition
• Adolescents start to abuse their mind and body
because they think that the energy they have is
enough for the things they do.
5. Developing or Regaining Self-
Esteem
• Most adolescents have doubts to their strengths; they
see their weaknesses more than their strengths.

• They must see both good and bad, both strength and
weakness, and both positive and negative.
6. Roles
• Every adolescent has roles to play. The challenge
comes in when an adolescent is expected to perform
a role that is not aligned with his or her preferred role.
7. Material Poverty
• Some adolescents face material poverty that is why
some adolescents stop studying, and started to work
at a young age.

• Some cannot even buy the things they need because

of poverty.
8. Career Choice
• Adolescents who know their self too much can easily
identify the career they want to pursue in the future.

• In order to find the accurate career, adolescents must

know their skills, hobbies, and interests that will help
them build their decision on what career will they
take.
9. Relationship
• Adolescents start to build relationship among friends
and opposite sex. They must preserve a healthy
relationship.

• Adolescents who do not know their identity well are

having a hard time to build relationships and might go
to peers who can give bad influence to them.
9. Relationship
• Entering romantic relationship is also hard in
adolescence because emotions and immaturity are
dominating the relationship.
10. Values and Beliefs
• Adolescents develop their own values and beliefs that
might be different from the people they are with,
friends, and especially their family.
