Mathematics as a

Language
"Mathematics is the language in
which God has written the universe."

-Galileo Galilei
What Is a Language?

 A language can be a system of words or codes used

in a specific field.

 Language can also mean a way to communicate

using symbols or sounds.
Vocabulary, Grammar, and Syntax
in Mathematics.
 Breaking this down, nouns in math include:
 Arabic numerals (0, 5, 123.7)
 Fractions (1⁄4, 5⁄9, 2 1⁄3)
 Variables (a, b, c, x, y, z)
 Expressions (3x, x2, 4 + x)
Vocabulary, Grammar, and Syntax
in Mathematics.
 Expressions (3x, , 4 + x)
 Diagrams or visual elements (circle, angle,
triangle, matrix)
 Infinity (∞)
 Pi (π)
 Imaginary numbers (i, -i)
 The speed of light (c)
Vocabulary, Grammar, and Syntax
in Mathematics.
 Verbs include symbols including:
 Equalities or inequalities (=, <, >)
 Actions such as addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division (+, -, x or *, ÷ or /)
 Other operations (sin, cos, tan, sec)
Expression Vs. Sentences
 A paragraph contains simple sentences that convey
ideas.
 In mathematics, ideas are likewise given, however
some difficulties arise when it is presented in a
language that everyone could comprehend.
 A simple sentence contains at least one noun and one
verb.
 Example of simple sentence:
 Sarah visits BBM.
 Noun: Sarah
 Verb: visits
Expression Vs. Sentences

 In math, the equivalent of noun is expression

and the complete thought is also called a
sentence.
 Example: 2+3=5 5x=10
 Expressions: 2+3, 5x
Expression Vs. Sentences
 The verb: = sign
 Expressions can look different but are the same. In
English they are referred as synonyms
 Example beautiful and pretty, huge and big
 In mathematical expressions, the following represent
synonyms

International Rules

 Mathematics grammar and syntax, like vocabulary,

are international.
 No matter what country you're from or what
language you speak, the structure of the
mathematical language is the same.
International Rules
 Formulas are read from left to right.
 The Latin alphabet is used for parameters and
variables. To some extent, the Greek alphabet
is also used.
 Integers are usually drawn from i, j, k, l, m, n.
 Real numbers are represented by a, b, c, α, β,
γ. Complex numbers are indicated by w and z.
Unknowns are x, y, z. Names of functions are
usually f, g, h.
International Rules
 Because mathematics is the same all over the
world, math can act as a universal language. A
phrase or formula has the same meaning,
regardless of another language that accompanies
it. In this way, math helps people learn and
communicate, even if other communication
barriers exist.
Conventions in Mathematical
Language
 The common symbol used for multiplication is
but it can be mistakenly taken as the variable
x.

 is used
 ()

Conventions in Mathematical
Language
 It is conventional to write the number first
before the letters
 In case the letters are more than one, you have
to arrange the letters alphabetically.

Introduction
 Mathematical operations are the foundation of
problem-solving in mathematics. Whether
working with basic arithmetic or advanced
algebra, performing operations correctly ensures
accuracy in calculations. This lesson will cover the
basic operations, the order of operations
(PEMDAS/BODMAS), and common mistakes to
avoid when solving mathematical expressions.
Basic Mathematical Operations

Operation Symbo Example Explanation

l
Addition + 5+3=8 Combines two or
more numbers.
Subtraction - 9-4=5 Finds the difference
between numbers.
Multiplicatio x 2x5 Repeated addition
n of the same
number.
Division / or Splits a number
into equal parts.
Order of Operations (PEMDAS Rule)

 When solving mathematical expressions with

multiple operations, we must follow a specific
order to ensure consistency.
 PEMDAS Rule (Common in the US)
 P−Parentheses
 E−Exponents
 MD−Multiplication and Division (from left to rig
ht)
 AS−Addition and Subtraction (from left to right
)
PEMDAS Rule
Example Problem: Solve the expression
 Step-by-Step Solution Using PEMDAS:
1. Parentheses First:

2. Exponents:

3. Multiplication and Division (Left to Right):

4. Addition and subtraction (left to right)
