TRI-GATE Transistor

The document discusses the tri-gate transistor technology as a potential solution to continuing Moore's Law. Moore's Law states that the number of transistors on integrated circuits doubles every two years. Traditional planar transistors were reaching their limits at 65nm. The tri-gate transistor employs three gates instead of one to allow three times the surface area for electrons. This results in lower leakage, faster and cooler operation, and a 45% increase in on/off speed. It also reduces transistor size and power dissipation. Intel expects tri-gate transistors to become the basic building blocks for future microprocessors and allow Moore's Law scaling to continue into the next decade.

TRI-GATE TRANSISTOR TECHNOLOGY

A Seminar By: K VENKAT SATWIK ECE-08R01A0492

TRANSISTORS:
Microscopic Silicon based Switches Fundamental building block of semiconductor chips. Traditional planar transistors shrink up to 65nm. The planar process used to make these transistors made mass produced integrated circuits possible.

MOORES LAW:

Moore's law describes a longterm trend in the history of computing hardware, in which the number of transistors that can be placed inexpensively on an integrated circuit has doubled approximately every two years.

THE PROBLEM
End of traditional Dimension scaling era. Nanoscale Design Rule Regime: Dimensional scaling does not mean better transistor performance. Power Limited Era: New Transistor Architectures are needed to meet the performance improvements while keeping within power budget. This is the most exciting time to be doing transistor research and development

CHALLENGES
Solutions Beyond 45nm Node: Uniaxial Strain: Ultimate limit for maximum compression of planar transistors Power Limitation: Implications on future transistor structures Parasitics Dominated Era: How to address increasing negative impact of parasitics ?

SOLUTION:
TRI-GATE TRANSISTOR Also known as 3D-Transistor by its manufacturers: Intel According to intel, 3d transistor has: 3D Structure Runs Faster, Better performance Reduces transistor size Reduces power dissipation.

WHAT IS TRI-GATE?

These transistors employ a single gate stacked on top of two vertical gates allowing for essentially three times the surface area for electrons to travel.

ARCHITECTURE

Built on an ultra thin layer of fully depleted silicon. Raised source and drain structure. Compatible to future introduction of high-K gate dielectric. Thickness requirements of silicon is reduced by 2 to 3 times.

ADVANTAGES
Lower leakage and consume much less power. Faster and cooler operation. 45% increase in on/off speed. The basic building blocks of future microprocessors. Moores law scaling can be taken well into next decade.

APPLICATIONS

Critical part of Intels Energy efficient performance. Scaling of silicon transistors Increase battery life of mobile devices.

CONCLUSION
Compared to todays world leading 65nm transistors, this integrated trigate transistors can offer: 45% increased speed 35% reduced power at constant speed Intel expects these transistors to become the basic building blocks for future microprocessors. While this is one of the several options under investigation, these results give us confidence that we continue Moores law scaling.
