INTRODUCTIO

N
We decided to do plastic material salvage,
which is a process of collecting waste
(plastics, straws, and chips pockets) and
converting them into new materials and
objects (plastic mats, fans and dresses) to
gain some profit. We are creating a
healthier planet for ourselves and for the
future generation, which also reduces the
need of processing raw materials which will
then create a sustainable land pollution. It
is an effective idea as it reduces pollution
around our area
CAUSES of
land pollution

 Mining
 Landfill
 Urbanization
 Agriculture
 Deforestation
 Industrial activities
 Hazardous waste
 Nuclear power
Ways to prevent pollution.
 Avoid, Reduce and Re-use
 Buy in bulk in stores to prevent packaging
of each item.
 Choose pollution free mode of transport if
possible.
 Do not litter.
 Promote and create awareness
TEAM RULES
• Everyone needs to make an
equal work contribution.
• Respect for one another is
essential.
• When we meet, we must be
on time.
• Following agreed-upon
deadlines is vital, for both
individual and group tasks.
Notify your group members
in advance if you can’t meet
a certain deadline.
• Ensure that final products
are checked before they are
sold or distributed.
INTERVENTIONS
 If you do not contribute, we as a team will ask
the reason as to why you failed to contribute, if
you don’t produce a solid reason, we will then
write you off as someone who contributed
nothing, which might lead you to getting zero
for the project.

 Failing to respect and talk to others with

respect might get you kicked out of the project.
Step 1: Aim and objectives
of the project.
Aim
 To encourage environmentally friendly waste
management methods by up-cycling plastic trash
into valuable items to lessen environmental
pollution.
Objectives
 Raise awareness to the local community of Urban
view Residents and Durban University of Technology
students and staff. We will educate the community
about the importance of recycling plastics.
 Collect plastic waste from landfills and pavements
by converting them into new materials e.g plastic
dresses and fans!
 Encourage residents in the collection and creation of
upcycled products.
 Create a functional items like plastic door mats,
plastic pot mats & fans to minimize pollution.
STEP 2: Project Logistics
Location: Urban View Res & Durban University of Technology
campus
Date: to be determined based on the community availability

How will you go about completing this project?

Research and education.
 We will conduct comprehensive research on what is
causing this type of pollution and look at the
environmental effects caused by plastic pollution. Through
this project participants will learn the importance of
recycling plastic bags, straws, chips packets etc…
Collecting of materials
 We have started the collection of materials and encourage
the community members to donate the following
materials: Straws, plastic bags, chips packets… we also
collaborated with local shops to help us with the donations
or with plastic donations.
Product creation
 We will be using our hands to create plastic door mats,
pots plants mats & fans out of straws & chips packets. This
Promotion
 The project is being promoted through social media
and community announcements.
Evaluation
 We will use surveys or create a comment section to
evaluate the project’s efficacy in monitoring recycling
behaviors. Keep records of the number of plastics
being recycled from landfills and pavements.
Child-focused activities
 We will be making fans out of plastic straws and chips
packets. This will help to teach the importance of
saving or recycling at a young age.
Community engagement
 We plan to partner with Durban University of
Technology and Urban view community, to create a
sense of community involvement. This will help in a
sense that the community will have to try and collect
plastics, so that we can teach the participants on how
to create their own door mats, plastic dresses, and
colorful straw fans.
STEP 4: Limitations
 Competition can be a problem in this project.
Reason being, they may be already established
people in this industry, therefore competing with
existing businesses can be a problem.
 For us to make a profit in the recycling industry,
there must be demand on the market foe recycled
materials. Meaning, if there’s no market demand,
we won’t make profit leading our project failing or
not taking place.
 Our recycled products need to have good quality,
so making sure we have good quality and
consistency may be time consuming.
 Communication is key for an excellent project,
between team members. So, if there’s no
communication, the project will be a disaster and it
might not even happen.
Step 5: Plan for Success
 Investigate and Preparation: Research and find useful
information about different kinds of materials that will be
used. Ensure business plan is completely done and followed
accordingly.
 Choosing right location: Selecting safe and suitable
environment for recycling e.g. at the Market,
Beaches ,Durban university of technology and school
Residence. Ensure we utilize one Bus for our group members
and people who volunteer.
 Obtain equipment and innovation for technologies: If profit is
gained, we can buy specific machinery to increase
productivity and to save time.
 Build strong partnership: Collaborate with other businesses,
sharing different ideas regarding recycling as it is expected to
raise the revenue.
 Educating community: Teaching people the importance of
recycling.
 Marketing Strategies: Understand the needs of customers,
Outline business goals, competitors, buyer personas and
target market.
Step 6: Skills Development
 You develop a lot of skills when preventing
land pollution. You learn how to reduce,
reuse, and recycle instead of throwing
something away.
 By knowing what land pollution does to the
environment and atmosphere, you learn to
reduce littering or throwing things on the
ground not bins.
 Instead of buying a new grocery bag, you can
choose to use the one you have at home.
 By recycling you give that certain material a
different use. For example, we will turn
plastics and straws into dresses, fans, and
mats. That’s a skill you develop when you
decide to stop littering.
