WHAT IS A MAP?
• A map is a symbolic representation of
selected characteristics of a place, usually
drawn on a flat surface.
• They teach about the world by showing sizes
and shapes of countries, locations of
features, and distances between places.

PARTS OF A MAP
1. TITLE OF THE MAP
• Typically found at
the top of the map.
• The title explains
the subject of the
map and gives you
an idea of what
information the
map conveys.
2. COMPASS ROSE
• is a symbol on a map that
shows the cardinal
directions. The cardinal
directions are the main
compass points—north,
south, east, and west.
• The ordinal directions are
northwest, northeast,
southwest, and southeast.
• The compass rose is used to
show how the map lines up
with real directions.
3. LEGEND
A legend or key lists explains
the symbols and use of color
on the map
4. SCALE
shows the ratio between a
unit of length on the map
and a unit of distance on
the earth.
