Understanding Speed and Distance Graphs

The document outlines the concepts of speed and distance, emphasizing the differences between average speed, instantaneous speed, and constant speed. It includes objectives for measuring and graphing distance versus time, interpreting speed-distance graphs, and evaluating motion through scientific investigations. Additionally, it provides formulas for calculating speed and examples of word problems to practice these concepts.

SPEED AND DISTANCE

Standard

SC.6.P.12.1 Measure and graph

distance versus time for an
object
moving at a constant speed.
Interpret this relationship.
Objectives.
● Differentiate between average speed,
instantaneous speed and constant speed to
describe a change in position over time Identify
changes in speed as positive acceleration or
negative acceleration Interpret and/or analyze a
graph of relative speed of an object at various
points or sections of the graph
● Interpret and/or analyze graphs of distance and
time for an object moving at a constant speed
● Create original graphs from recorded distance
and time and interpret motion of objects
● Evaluate the motion of an object using evidence
from scientific investigations
ESSENTIAL QUESTION:

What factors determine motion?

What can you interpret from a speed-
distance graph?
What information can be learned from
graphs of distance and time for an
object moving at a constant speed?
WHAT DO YOU THINK SPEED IS?

“Speed, Distance, Time

1. WHAT IS DISTANCE?

●Total space to be travelled between

two points
●Example: The distance from New
York to Los Angeles is 2,776 miles.
WHAT IS SPEED?
●Speed is a measure of how fast something
moves or the distance it moves, in a given
amount of time.
●Speed is a way to say “how far something
goes in a certain amount of time,” or “how
long it takes for something to travel a
certain distance.”
DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPEED

• Average Speed
• Is the total distance traveled divided by the
total time passed.
Total Distance
• Average speed = Total Time

• Instantaneous Speed
• The speed at which the object is moving at
that EXACT time.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPEED

• Constant Speed

CAN YOU
• Steady speed over a period of time, no
increase or decrease in speed.

INSTANTANEOUS SPEED CFU

• What is the instantaneous speed

of this vehicle?
INSTANTANEOUS SPEED CFU

• What is the instantaneous speed of this

vehicle?
BRAINPOP: DISTANCE, RATE, AND TIME
***TWO IMPORTANT
THINGS TO REMEMBER!!
***

“/” can be read as “per” – 3 miles/hour = 3 miles per

hour
UNITS ARE VERY IMPORTANT!!! It doesn’t make any
sense to say that “Ms. Currie can walk 3.”
WHAT IS THE FORMULA FOR
SPEED?

●Speed = Distance/Time
●“Speed equals distance over time.”

S = d/t
Let’s try it!
If something travels 50 miles in one hour,
what is its speed?
50 miles
= 50 miles per hour
1 hour

If something travels 4 meters in one

second, what is its speed?
4 meters
= 4 meters per second = 4 m/s
1 second
If something travels 10 miles in two hours,
what is its speed?

10 miles
= 5 miles per hour
2 hours
An object moves 3 meters in 3 hours. What
is its speed?
3 meters
3 hours
= 1 meter per hour

An object moves 10 centimeters in 5

seconds. What is its speed?

10 centimeters
5 seconds
= 2 centimeters per second

SOMETIMES, SPEED QUESTIONS ARE
WORD PROBLEMS.
JUST SET UP YOUR SPEED TRIANGLE!

was her speed in miles/hour?
2. Nolvia jogged for 30 minutes. She ran 4 miles.

3. Michell threw a ball. It traveled 50 meters in 5
seconds. What was the speed of the ball in
meters/second?
4. Ms. Monroe was going 60 miles/hour on the
freeway. How far did she get after 1 hour?
5. Ms. Galindo was going 60 miles/hour on the
freeway. How far did she get after 2 hours?
