Operating System

An operating system (OS) is essential system software that manages computer hardware and software resources, providing a user interface for interaction. There are various types of operating systems, including real-time, single-user, multi-user, and multiprocessing systems, each serving different operational needs. The OS performs critical functions such as resource allocation, security, and coordination between software and users, ensuring effective computer performance.

Subject: ICT
W.A.L.T
1. understand what an operating
system is and its importance.
3. 2. identify the types of operating
systems.
3. explain the functions of an
operating system
Essential Question(s)
• Just like God demonstrated his creativity in creation, how can you demonstrate creativity in your day-to-day
activities?

Biblical Integration
operating system is like a 'good shepherd' guiding and
managing the computer, just like God guides and manages
our lives (John 10:11).
OPERATING SYSTEM
An operating system (OS) is system software that manages the hardware and
software resources of the computer. An operating system is software that
controls the overall activity of a computer. it is a collection of programs that act
as an interface between the user’s program and the computer hardware.
The main purpose of the operating system is to effectively and judiciously
manage the computer system resources, such as processors, main memory,
secondary storage, input and output devices and files. Examples of
Operating systems include:
 Windows (95, 98, 2000, NT, ME, XP, 7, 8, 10)
 Linux
 Unix
 ios
 android
 Chrome OS
 Mac OS
For users to be able to interact with the
computer machine, the operating system
provides the user with what is called user
interface (UI). This is the space through where
interactions between humans and machine
occur. The goal of UI is to allow effective
operation of the computer machine.
Types of User Interface
(i) Command based interface: In command
based interface, lines of command are used to
instruct or communicate with the computer
system.
(ii) Graphical User Interface (GUI): With OPERATING SYSTEM

graphical user interface, you interact with the

TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEM
There are different types of operating system
as specified by their operational
performance. The most commonly used
operating systems are:
1. Realtime operating system
2. Single user Operating System
3. Multi User Operating System
4. Distributed Operating System
5. Multiprocessing Operating System
OPERATING SYSTEM
i. Real-time operating system (RTOS) -A Real-Time
Operating System: This is an operating system
that rapidly switches between tasks. Real-time
operating systems are used to control machinery,
scientific instruments and industrial systems.
ii. Single-user-single task: As the name implies,
this operating system is designed to manage the
computer so that one user can effectively do one
thing at a time.
iii. Single-user, multi-tasking: As the name
implies, this operating system is designed to
manage the computer so that one user can
effectively do more than one thing at a time.
iv. Multi-user: A multi-user operating system OPERATING SYSTEM
allows many different users to take advantage of
the computer's resources simultaneously.
5. Multiprocessing Operating
System:Multiprocessing operating system
is the operating system that supports the
use of two or more central processing unit
(CPU’s) within a single computer system. It
also refers to the ability of an operating
system to support more than one processor
or the ability to allocate tasks between
them. Examples of multi processing
operating system are Windows NT, 2000,
XP, and UNIX.
OPERATING SYSTEM
SERVICES PERFORMED FOR
APPLICATIONS BY AN OPERATING
SYSTEM:
1. The OS determines which applications
should run in what order and how much time
should be allowed for each application before
giving another application a turn during
multitasking.
2. The OS manages the sharing of internal
memory among multiple applications.
3. It handles input and output to and from
attached hardware devices, such as hard disks,
printer and dial-up ports. OPERATING SYSTEM

4. It can offload the management of what are

FUNCTIONS OF AN OPERATING
SYSTEM
 Boot process: when the computer is
switched on, the boot program that is
resided in ROM initialize the setup of the
computer, it then Loads the rest of the
OS from the banking storage (Hardware)
in the RAM.
 The OS does the work of sharing and
accounting of the computer resources.
 It handles the input and output of data
and information
 Resource allocation: the operating OPERATING SYSTEM

system ensures the proper use of all the

FUNCTIONS OF AN OPERATING SYSTEM
 Control over system performance: the OS
monitors overall system health to help
improve performance, records the response
time between service request and system
response to having a complete view of the
system health.
 Security: the operating system uses
password protection to protect user data and
similar other techniques. It also prevents
unauthorized access to programs and user
data.
 Coordination between other software and
users: operating systems also Coordinate OPERATING SYSTEM
and assign interpreters, compilers,
Image or video
Assessment and Evaluation

• What is an operating software?

• Explain services performed by an operation
system to applications.
Conclusion
Write a paragraph explaining the role of an
operating system, stating examples.
