An Introduction to the Writing Style
Writi
ng
At the end of the lesson, you’ll:

• determine the structure of academic text;

• explain the specific ideas related to
academic texts; and
• differentiate language used in academic
texts from various disciplines/other texts.
What is writing?

• It is a form of human communication by

means of a set of visible marks that are
related, by convention, to some particular
structural level of language.
What is writing?
• It may be defined as any conventional
system of marks or signs that represents
the utterances of a language. Writing
renders language visible; while speech
is ephemeral.
• The following are factors in writing:
• topic, role, purpose, and audience.
Topic/Context
• What is the text about?
• What details am I importing to the
readers?
• What is being discussed in the text?
• What is the main idea?
Role
• Who am I as a writer?
• Do I write as a sibling? A student? A
customer?
• What shoes are you filling in?
• What is your perspective in writing?
Purpose

• Why am I writing this in the first place?

• What influences you to write?
• What are the personal interests that
affect your decision to write?
Audience

• Who is reading this piece?

• What knowledge does he/she need to
understand in my writing?
What is Academic
Writing Style?
Academic Writing Style

• Academic writing is clear, concise,

focused, structured and backed up
by evidence. Its purpose is to aid
the reader’s understanding.
Academic Writing Style
• Its characteristics include a formal
tone, use of the third-person rather
than first-person perspective (usually),
a clear focus on the research
problem under investigation, and
precise word choice.
Characteristics of Academic
Writing
• Planned and focused: answers the question and
demonstrates an understanding of the subject.
• Structured: is coherent, written in a logical order,
and brings together related points and material.
• Evidenced: demonstrates knowledge of the subject
area, supports opinions and arguments with
evidence, and is referenced accurately.
• Formal in tone and style: uses appropriate
language and tenses, and is clear, concise and
balanced.
How is it different from others?
• First, academic writing is formal in style. Personal
writing does not have to be formal and often
times it is not.
• Second, academic writing is based on extensive
research and seeks to prove a point within an
academic field. This alone makes it very different
than any other type of writing.
• Third, academic writing is meant for a specific
audience. It is not for the general public.
Importance of Academic Writing

• It develops the:
• Critical thinking and reasoning skills
• Language skills
• Research skills, because you learn a lot
