The document provides an overview of Scopus and Web of Science, two key abstract and citation databases used for measuring research impact in social sciences. It discusses their features, strengths, and how to access them, along with bibliometric measures such as h-index and i10 index, and tools for author disambiguation like ORCID and ResearcherID. Additionally, it introduces Kopernio and Mendeley as tools for improving research workflow and citation management.

What are Web of Science and
Scopus?
Both these resources are ‘abstract and citation’ databases – this means they have
lots of information about journal articles and other publications.

Many institutions have a subscription to both databases, and additionally they

have access to many (but not all) of the full text articles they cover in print
and/or online form.

They are useful for finding articles, and for tracking citations and other metrics.

Which is
better?

Again, both Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus are used for measuring research impact.

The Web of Science Core Collection is probably the single most authoritative source.

Scopus is a very useful alternative for measuring the citation impact of articles, journals and
authors.
Scopus has a larger dataset, so more articles, journals and conference papers will have metrics.
Metrics will be different numbers (e.g. h-indexes tend to be higher) – there is the usual need to
compare ‘like with like’.

SCImago Journal and Country Rank (SJR)

Source Normalized Impact Per Paper (SNIP)

• This indicator measures the average citation impact of the publications of a journal. This is
normalized in order to correct for differences in citation practices between scientific fields.

Impact Per Publication (IPP)

• This is calculated as the number of citations given in the present year to publications in the past
three years divided by the total number of publications in the past three years. This is
comparable to impact factor.

• h-index

has published h papers each
of which has been cited in
other papers at least h times

h-
index
Pros:

• easy to understand and calculate

• the metric is intended to avoid disproportionate effects of participation in a single publication of
major influence (the g- index and e-index take a different approach)

Cons:

• Does not account for self-citation which can artificially inflate the h-index
• does not account for different disciplinary citation patterns
• does not take into account the author number, ignoring both the total number of authors and
author position.
• does not take into account eh age of a paper, i.e. if an author stops publishing their h-index never
drops but can rise, thus the h-index is a measure of lifetime achievement rather than current
impact.
• i10 index
• This is number of publications with at least 10 citations
Author • Created by Google Scholar and used in Google's My Citations feature.

Author
Disambiguation
• As a researcher and scholar in your field, it is important to distinguish your body
of research and scholarly works from other authors, for example to demonstrate
impact to funding bodies or to facilitate collaborations with other researchers.
• This can be challenging particularly for authors with common surnames and with
the various ways of denoting a person's name.
• There are several tools available to help you disambiguate yourself from other
researchers and to compile and showcase your own work for the scholarly
community at large.
• ORCID
• ResearcherID
ORCI
DThe Open Researcher Community ID is an increasingly recognized

persistent digital identifier.
• The unique number assigned to you will allow publishers and
aggregators of scholarly literature to distinguish you from researchers
with similar names. In fact, ORCID numbers are increasingly required
by publishers and funders when you submit a manuscript for
publication or apply for grant funding.
• This is a powerful tool in author disambiguation and it takes just a few
minutes to sign up.

Researche
rID
• The Web of Knowledge features ResearcherID, a service with which
you can create and manage your scholarly profile, generate citation
metrics and connect with other scholars. ResearcherID, in tandem
with ORCID, assigns a unique ID to each author and allows authors to
identify papers that they contributed to.

Kopernio
What is
Kopernio
What is
Kopernio…
• Kopernio is a London-based startup, established in 2017, by the
founders of Mendeley and Newsflo, Jan Reichelt and Ben Kaube.
• Publisher-neutral platform for research workflow and analysis for
scientific researchers, publishers and institutions worldwide.
• Legally provide one-click access to millions of journal articles and
academic research papers across the globe.
• Dramatically improving and facilitating access to scientific
knowledge.
• Addresses the issue of circuitous, time-consuming and manual routes
that researchers take to access the journal articles they need, even
when their institutions and organisations have legitimate subscription
What is
Kopernio…
• Kopernio uses artificial intelligence to enable users to seamlessly
access journal articles with just one-click, saving researchers time and
frustration when accessing their institutional subscriptions.
• Kopernio automatically detects what individual or institutional
subscriptions a user already possesses and facilitates instant access to
the chosen article.
• It will also suggest free, alternative legal versions of the content that
might already exist on openly available platforms if a user lacks the
required subscriptions to access content behind a paywall.
