Air pollution is defined as the presence of harmful substances in the atmosphere that adversely affect human health and the environment. Major sources include stationary sources like factories and power plants, and criteria pollutants such as carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide are of particular concern due to their health and environmental impacts. Various control techniques are employed to reduce emissions and mitigate air pollution effects.

INTRODUCTION • Atmospheric condition in which presence of certain substance in such concentrations produce undesir- able effect on the man and environment. • They may be gases or particular matter. • SOxS, NOxS, CO, hydrocarbons etc are some of the gases. • Smoke , dust, fumes, and aerosols are some of the particular matter. • Thei presence in an amount is greater than natural percentage is considered to be causing air pollution. SOURCES OF AIR POLLUTION • Stationary and area sources : A stationary source of air pollution refers to an emission source that does not move . • Stationary sources includes a factories , power plants, dry cleaners, etc. • Residential wood burner are good example of a small source, but when combined with many other small sources. CRITERIA POLLUTANTS • We have identified six common air pollutants of concern and are called criteria pollutants. • The criteria pollutants are carbon monoxide , lead, nitrogen dioxide , ozone, particulate matter , and sulphur dioxide . • Exposure to these substances can cause health effects , environmental effects , and property damage. CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) • Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless , odourless , and poisonous gas and one of the six criterial pollutants for which EPA has es- tablished protective standards. AIR POLLUTION CONTROL TECH- NIQUES • Source control techniques. • Important - sets the tools to control air pollu- tants emissions. • Control measurments describes the equip- ment processes or actions used to reduce air pollution . • The extent of pollution reduction varies among technologies and measurments.
