Conservatism 081307

Conservatism is a political doctrine that values inherited traditions and practices over new theories, emphasizing the government's role in preserving societal norms. Conservatives believe in a permanent moral order and the need for guidance to maintain social harmony, viewing human nature as inherently selfish and irrational. The movement gained prominence in the late 18th century, with Edmund Burke recognized as a key figure in articulating modern conservatism in response to the French Revolution.

CONSERVATISM
What is Conservatism?
Conservatism is the preference for
inherited values and ideas instead of
creating new, abstract theories.
Conservatisms prefer the old and
tried methods instead of abstract,
untried ideas.
What is a Conservative?
Conservatives are individuals who believes in the political
doctrine of conservatism. This group of people aligns with
traditional institutions and social, political, and economic
preservation practices. Being a conservative means there is the
common belief that the government is responsible for
preserving traditions, in their position as the people's servant,
instead of the master. Conservatives, therefore, oppose the
politics of deliberate changing of the politics and functioning of
society by the government.
Assumptions that conservatives make to perpetuate their agenda:

The assumption is that human beings are naturally selfish, irrational, and prone
to violence because selfish desires primarily drive them.

They believe in a transcendent moral order, which requires people to conform

to pre-existing societal principles.

The conservative ideology believes that a permanent moral order ensures

harmony in society. Man needs guidance for an order to prevail, and these
orders were made specifically for them. The state of human nature never
changes, and the moral truths that exist are to remain permanent.
Assumptions that conservatives make to perpetuate their agenda:

This ideology also believes in customs, convention, and continuity. This means
that human beings adhere to the existing traditions and follow their ancestors'
footsteps.

Conservative ideology insists on prudent restraints on power and human

beings themselves. Since passions and desires drive man, traditional rules and
laws will guide people and tame their eccentricities
HISTORY
It was not until the late 18th century, in
reaction to the upheavals of the French
Revolution (1789), that Conservatism
began to develop as a distinct political
attitude and movement. The term
conservative was introduced after 1815 by
supporters of the newly restored Bourbon
Monarchy in France, including the Author
and Diplomat Franƈois-Auguste-René,
vicomte de Chateaubriand.
HISTORY
The originator of Modern, articulated
conservatism (though he never used the
term himself) is generally acknowledged to
be the British Parliamentarian and Political
Writer Edmund Burke, whose ‘Reflections
on the Revolution in France’ (1790) was a
forceful expression of conservatives’
rejection of the French Revolution and a
major inspiration for counterrevolutionary
theorists in the 19th century.
HISTORY
Society is 'organic,' or real,
rather than just an abstraction
created by the musings of
philosophers. Burke believed
that the state holds the
wisdom accumulated by
society over time and should
be given a great deal of
respect.
