USE: REPORTED
SPEECH
It’s used when we want to tell another person about a
conversation that took place in the past.

 Give someone a telephone message. e.g. “Ellen said she couldn’t

come today because…”
 Tell some news that we heard from some else: e.g. “Tom told me that
he and Karen got engaged”.
 To report someting that happened. e.g. “Sam said that the other
driver wasn’t paying attention and hit his”. car S am

A piece of more information

a) It isn’t always necessary to change the tense if

something is still true now
Direct speech: Diane said, “I am a teacher”
Reported Speech: Diane said that she is a teacher
This is still
true!!
b)Don’t need to change the pronoun when one is reporting
one own words

Occasionally, we don't need to change the

present tense into the past if the information
in direct speech is still true (but this is only for
things which are general facts, and even then
usually we like to change the tense):

Direct speech: The sky is blue.

Reported speech: She said (that) the sky
is/was blue.
