Distinguishin

g Fact from
Opinion
1. Both brains and computers are studied by
scientists. FACT
EVIDENCE:
Scientists understand how computers work.
There are thousands of neuroscientists
studying the brain. Nevertheless, there is
still much more to learn about the brain.
"There is more we do NOT know about the
brain, than what we do know about the
brain"
2. Both can do math and other logical
tasks. FACT
EVIDENCE:
The computer is faster at doing logical
things and computations. However, the
brain is better at interpreting the outside
world and coming up with new ideas.
The brain is capable of imagination.
3.The computer is better than
the brain. OPINION
Evidence:
it is best to say that the brain is
better at doing some jobs and
the computer is better at doing
other jobs.
A FACT: - can be proven true or
false through objective evidence.
- relies on denotative language.
- frequently uses
measurable or verifiable
numbers, statistics, dates, and
measurements.
AN OPINION:
- cannot be presently verified.
- relies on connotative language.
- can mean different things to
different people.
- uses value judgment words and
comparisons such as “best,” “most,”
Opinions may sometimes look like facts
because of professional or technical-
sounding words: State funded, and
accredited schools are far superior to
private institutions.
A falsehood fact is still a fact: Most
experts agree that smoking daily can
improve your health.
Predictions are opinions because they
two types of words to identify
Opinions:
1. Biased Words (bad, worse, worst,
good, better, best, worthwhile,
worthless, etc.)
2. Qualifiers (all, always, likely,
never, might seem, possibly,
probably, should, etc.)
Put a check mark before the
number if opinion. Provide
evidence.
1. The cake tastes delicious.
2. She looks sad.
3. He is childish.
4. My history teacher hates me.
5. The movie was boring.
Draw a heart before the number if the
statement is a fact.
1. Your heart pumps blood through
your body.
2. The leaves of growing plants are
usually green.
3. People use their legs to walk.
4. Some people keep dogs as pets.
5. 1 liter of water weighs 1 kilogram.
A fact is a statement that can be
verified. It can be proven to be true
or false through objective evidence.
An opinion is a statement that
expresses a feeling, an attitude, a
value judgment, or a belief. It is a
statement that is neither true nor
false. Or it may feel true for some,
but false for others.
Read this story, think about what parts are fact
and what parts are opinion.

Jack lives in a small town in Australia. The closest

big city is an hour’s drive away. Jack looks forward
to going to the city because when they drive
through the countryside, they almost always see
kangaroos. Sometimes they even see a baby
kangaroo riding in its mother’s pouch. Jack knows
all about kangaroos. A baby is called a joey, a
mother is called a doe, and a father is called a
boomer. A group of kangaroos is called a mob
Once, Jack saw a kangaroo jump about three
times its height. It was an amazing sight! He
knows that when kangaroos are hopping
along at high speed, they can go as fast as
40 miles per hour. Jack also knows that even
though kangaroos are fun to look at, you
wouldn’t want to try to pet one. If a
kangaroo thinks it is in danger, it just might
lean back on its big tail and kick you with its
back feet.
Circle the word “fact” if it is true or happened in the story.
Circle the word “opinion” if it is what someone thinks or
believes.
