WHAT IS CLOUD COMPUTING
Cloud computing (cloud) is an evolving term that
describes the development of many existing technologies and
approaches to computing into something different.
Cloud separates application and information resources from
the underlying infrastructure, and the mechanisms used to
deliver those.
It enables convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool
of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers,
storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly
provisioned and released with minimal management effort
or cloud provider interaction
BENEFITS OF CLOUD COMPUTING
Scalability : Cloud infrastructure can easily be scaled up or down to meet the organization’s fluctuating business demands.
Lower Costs : A pay-as-you-go payment model allows organizations to control their IT costs by paying only for the
resources they use.
Multiple Storage Options : Enterprises can choose from public, private, or hybrid cloud storage offerings depending on
their
requirements and cloud security needs.
Data Security : Most “public” clouds (that is, those maintained by a cloud-services provider such as Amazon Web
Services or Microsoft Azure) offer advanced security features including granular permissions and access management,
authentication, encryption, API keys, and virtual private clouds (VPC) to secure sensitive data.
Multiple Control Choices : Organizations can determine their desired level of cloud control with multiple “as-a-service”
cloud
options, including SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS (software, infrastructure, and platform as a service).
NIST Cloud Computing Reference Model
It is designed to offer a clear, organized way to understand the various aspects of cloud computing. It helps organizations and
individuals grasp the different layers and services involved in cloud computing, facilitating better planning, implementation,
and management of cloud solutions.
Significance: The NIST Cloud Computing Reference Model is crucial for several reasons:
Standardization: It provides a common language and framework for discussing cloud computing, which aids in
reducing ambiguity and improving communication among stakeholders.
Guidance: It serves as a guideline for developing and deploying cloud solutions, ensuring consistency and compatibility.
Evaluation: It helps organizations evaluate and compare different cloud services and deployment models, aiding in
decision- making processes.
NIST’s cloud model is composed of:
Five essential characteristics
Three service models
Four deployment models
CHARACTERISTICS OF NIST MODEL
On-Demand Self-Service : Self-service means the cloud user can acquire the service independently, without going through
an IT department, call center, or other middleman. They can access and cancel the cloud anytime.
Broad Network Access : The cloud service must be broadly available over the communication network. Users should be
able to access it from any location and on an internet-enabled device.
Resource Pooling : Multiple customers share the cloud service resources in a multi-tenancy model. This model does
raise
privacy and security concerns, so users must protect their cloud data and assets by taking necessary security precautions.
Rapid Elasticity : Elasticity refers to the flexibility of the cloud service to scale up or down automatically to meet the
user’s
needs.
SERVICE MODELS IN NIST MODEL
IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service): The capability provided to the customer of IaaS is raw storage space,
computing, or network resources with which the customer can run and execute an operating system, applications,
or any software that they choose.
PaaS (Platform as a Service): The cloud provider not only provides the hardware, but they also provide a
toolkit and a number of supported programming languages to build higher level services (i.e. software applications
that are made available as part of a specific platform).
SaaS (Software as a Service): The SaaS customer is an end-user of complete applications running on a
cloud infrastructure and offered on a platform on-demand. The applications are typically accessible through a thin
client interface, such as a web browser.
DEPLOYMENT MODELS IN NIST
MODEL
Public Cloud: A public cloud‘s physical infrastructure is owned by a cloud service provider. Such a cloud
runs applications from different customers who share this infrastructure and pay for their resource utilization on a
utility computing basis.
Private Cloud: A pure private cloud is built for the exclusive use of one customer, who owns and fully
controls this cloud.
Community Cloud: When several customers have similar requirements, they can share an infrastructure and
might share the configuration and management of the cloud. This management might be done by themselves or by
third parties.
Hybrid Cloud: Any composition of clouds, be they private or public could form a hybrid cloud and be
manage a single entity, provided that there is sufficient commonality between the standards used by the constituent
clouds.

CONCLUSION
:
The NIST model for cloud computing provides a comprehensive framework defining cloud
computing's key characteristics, service models, and deployment models.
By standardizing terminology and outlining core principles, it helps organizations
understand, deploy, and manage cloud services effectively, ensuring consistency, security, and
scalability across diverse cloud environments..
