3 LAYERS OF THE HEART

4 CHAMBERS OF HEART
REMEMBER!

• ARTERIES= Blood AWAY from the HEART

• VEINS= Blood BACK to the heart
• BLOOD circulatory system in the human body/ BLOOD
CIRCULATION
• 2 CONNECTIONS:
• 1. SYSTEMIC CIRCULATION- provides ORGANS and TISSUES and
cells with BLOOD,- oxygen and other vital substances.
• 2.PULMONARY CIRCULATION – where FRESH OXYGEN we
breathe enters the BLOOD, then CO2 is released from the blood.
• WHEN THE HEART NO LONGER PUMPS, BLOOD AS WELL AS IT
SHOULD
FLUID OVERLOAD, WHICH LEADS TO EDEMA AND SWELLING IN THE
ABDOMEN AND LOWER LIMBS
CONSTRICTIVE PERICARDITIS, WHICH AFFECTS THE SAC THAT
SURROUNDS THE HEART
CARDIAC TAMPONADE, WHEN FLUID OTHER THAN BLOOD TAKES UP
SPACE IN THE HEART

• MOST COMMON IN
PATIENTS: HEART FAILURE

ATHEROSCLEROSIS AND
ARTERIOSCLEROSIS
• Arteriosclerosis refers to stiff and hard artery walls, which may lead to increased blood
pressure. Atherosclerosis is a type of arteriosclerosis involving plaque buildup within
the arteries. But that’s not the only difference.
• Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood away from your heart and to vital
organs.
• Atherosclerosis happens when these arteries become narrow due to a
buildup of plaque. This can make it difficult for oxygen to reach your organs.

• Atherosclerosis is a type of arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). The plaque buildup in

atherosclerosis makes the arteries thick and stiff.
