Parts of DOMRAC

and its functions

DOMESTIC REFRIGERATION AND AIR-CONDITIONING
• Identified parts of
refrigerator and air-
conditioner
• Determined the functions
of each part in the
refrigeration cycle.
Refrigeration: It is the
process of continuous
cooling or extraction of heat
to below that of the
atmosphere from a
substance with a help of the
external work.
Principle of refrigeration: It
is based on the second law
of thermodynamics that the
heat can made to flow from
cold body to a hot body with
the help of external source.
Refrigerator: it is a machine
which produces cold. It is used
to remove heat from the
refrigerated space and reject it
to atmosphere. Hence it
maintains the temperature
below the surrounding
atmosphere.
Refrigerant: it is the
working fluid used in
the refrigerator. E.g.
Ammonia, Methyl
chloride, Freon etc.
Ton of refrigeration:
It is the standard unit of the
refrigerator. It is the freezing
capacity of the one American short
ton of water from 0 c in 24 hrs.
One ton of the
refrigeration=3.5kW=3.5kJ/s=210
kJ/min.
Types of refrigerants:
The two main types of
refrigerants are
1. primary refrigerants
2. secondary refrigerants
Parts of a refrigerator and their
functions:
Evaporator: It is used to
receive the liquid
refrigerants from the
condenser through throttle
valve and to evaporate it.
It is also called as cooling
unit or freezing unit.
Compressor: The refrigerator
compressor is both a motor and a
pump that moves the refrigerant
inside the system . The compressor
compresses the low-temperature, low-
pressure refrigerant gas it receives
from the evaporator. A refrigerator
compressor works directly with the
condenser, evaporator coil and
expansion valve.
Condenser: It is used to
condense the
refrigerants at
saturation temperature
from vapour to liquid by
transferring its latent
heat to the water.
 Throttle(or) Expansion valve: It is used to
control the rate of admission of
refrigerants to the evaporator. As the
refrigerant expands in the valve, it loses its
pressure and temperature at its exit end
and gets cooled.
 They are called either expansion valves or
throttling valves, are used to reduce the
refrigerant condensing pressure (high
pressure) to the evaporating pressure (low
pressure) by a throttling operation and
regulate the liquid-refrigerant flow to the
evaporator to match the equipment and
load ...
A liquid receiver is a
storage tank for holding
liquid refrigerant and is
located after the condenser
in a refrigeration system. It
is an important part of any
system because it ensures
liquid refrigerant is entering
the expansion device.
Main Parts of
an Air
Conditioner
Compressor
Your AC compressor is the
lifeblood of your air
conditioner. The
compressor is responsible
for circulating and
pressurizing the
refrigerant in your unit, so
the refrigerant can carry
and release heat.
Condenser Coil
The condenser coil is located
outside the home, and it's where
the refrigerant releases the heat
it absorbed from inside. It is
responsible for rejecting the
energy taken up by the
evaporator coil into an external
environment, usually an outdoor
air source.
 Expansion valve
Between the condenser and evaporator
is a small device known as the
expansion valve. After the refrigerant
condenses into a liquid, it cannot absorb
heat. The expansion valve allows the
refrigerant to expand into gas after
experiencing a pressure drop and rapid
cooling. This cooled, gaseous refrigerant
is then directed into the evaporator
coils to start the air conditioning
process again. The coils help ensure
that the refrigerant remains gaseous as
it enters the evaporator coils, allowing it
to absorb heat from the indoor air
Evaporator

An air conditioner’s
evaporator coil, also called
the evaporator core, is the
part of the system where
the refrigerant absorbs
heat. It’s where the cold air
comes from.
Other Components of a Central AC System

Air filter
An air conditioner filter acts
like a screen, preventing dirt,
dust, and other airborne
particles from entering the
air conditioner. This critical
component is located within
the indoor unit.
Refrigerant
Refrigerant is the liquid
responsible for providing
cooling within the air
conditioner. It circulates
through the tubes within the
unit and has specific
properties that allow it to be
compressed and expanded,
enabling it to cool or heat a
room.
Fan
Fans play a crucial role in the
functioning of an air
conditioner. They are used to
circulate air from one
component to another and to
distribute cooled air
throughout the rooms in your
home. Additionally, fans
prevent the outdoor unit from
overheating by expelling heat
away from the unit.
Thermostat
The thermostat is a crucial
component of an air conditioner,
responsible for regulating the
indoor temperature to meet your
desired setting. It acts as a control
center for your air conditioner,
allowing you to set your preferred
temperature. The thermostat
automatically turns the AC on or
off to maintain this temperature.
