Semiconductor

ROM (Read-
Only Memory)
JEREMIAH GEORGE
ROLL NO:10
MCA S1
Introduction to ROM

 - ROM is a semiconductor memory for permanent

data storage.
 - Retains data without power.
 - Used for firmware and essential instructions.
Characteristics of ROM

 - Non-volatile: Data persists without power.

 - Read-only: Pre-written and unmodifiable during
normal operation.
 - Reliable for storing critical instructions.
 - Slower than RAM.
Types of ROM (Overview)

 - Mask ROM (MROM)

 - Programmable ROM (PROM)
 - Erasable Programmable ROM (EPROM)
 - Electrically Erasable Programmable ROM
(EEPROM)
 - Flash Memory
Mask ROM (MROM)

 - Features:
 - Data hardwired during manufacturing.
 - Cannot be modified.
 - Advantages: Low cost for large-scale use.
 - Applications: Calculators, early gaming consoles.
Programmable ROM
(PROM)
 - Features:
 - One-time programmable using a PROM
programmer.
 - Irreversible process via fuses.
 - Applications: Device configuration, prototype
development.
Erasable Programmable
ROM (EPROM)
 - Features:
 - Reprogrammable using ultraviolet (UV) light.
 - Requires a quartz window for erasure.
 - Applications: Development and testing phases.
Electrically Erasable
Programmable ROM
(EEPROM)
 - Features:
 - Erasable and reprogrammable via electrical
signals.
 - Slower write speeds.
 - Applications: BIOS storage, firmware updates.
Flash Memory

 - Features:
 - Fast block-level erasure and reprogramming.
 - Non-volatile like EEPROM.
 - Applications: USB drives, SSDs, embedded
systems.
Advantages of ROM

 - Non-volatile: Retains data permanently.

 - Permanent storage for firmware.
 - Cost-effective for large production.
 - Reliable and resistant to overwriting.
Disadvantages of ROM

 - Limited reprogrammability in most types.

 - Slower access speeds compared to RAM.
 - Requires specialized tools for programming or
erasing.
Applications of ROM

 - Firmware storage: BIOS/UEFI in computers.

 - Embedded systems: Microwaves, washing
machines.
 - Gaming: Storing game data in cartridges.
 - Consumer electronics: Smartphones, TVs,
cameras.
 - Medical devices: Storing critical operation data.
Conclusion

 - ROM is essential for storing permanent data.

 - Plays a vital role in electronic devices and
computing.
 - Different types cater to various applications.
