TRIANGLES

Chapter 7
INTRODUCTION TO TRIANGLES
What is a Triangle?
A triangle is a three-sided polygon that is one of the simplest geometric
shapes in mathematics. It is defined by three straight sides and three
angles, where the sum of the angles always equals 180 degrees.
WHAT IS ISOSCELES TRIANGLE ?
• A TRIANGLES IN WHICH TWO SIDES ARE EQUAL IS
CALLED AN ISOSCELES TRIANGLES
ALL MEASURES 3.5 CM
ABC OF FIG IS AN ISOSCELES TRIANGLES
WITH AB=AC
TYPES OF TRIANGLES
By Sides:
Equilateral: All three sides are equal.
Isosceles: Two sides are equal.
Scalene: All three sides are different.

By Angles:
Acute: All three angles are less than 90 degrees.
Right: One angle is exactly 90 degrees.
Obtuse: One angle is greater than 90 degrees.
TRIANGLE PROPERTIES
• Angle Sum Property: The sum of the interior angles is always 180
degrees.
• Exterior Angle Property: An exterior angle of a triangle is equal to the
sum of the two opposite interior angles.
• Pythagorean Theorem: In a right triangle, a2+b2+c2 where c is the
hypotenuse.
CONGRUENCE OF TRIANGLES

• SAS RULE (SIDE ANGLE SIDE )

• ASA RULE (ANGLE SIDE ANGLE)
• AAS RULE (ANGLE ANGLE SIDE)
• SSS RULE (SIDE SIDE SIDE)
• RHS RULE (RIGHT ANGLE HYPOTENUSE SIDE )
SAS RULE

• If any two sides and the angle included

between the sides of one triangle are
equivalent to the corresponding two
sides and the angle between the sides
of the second triangle, then the two
triangles are said to be congruent by
SAS rule.
ASA RULE

• If any two angles and the side included

between the angles of one triangle are
equivalent to the corresponding two angles
and side included between the angles of
the second triangle, then the two triangles
are said to be congruent by ASA rule.
AAS RULE

• AAS stands for Angle-Angle-Side. When

two angles and a non-included side of a
triangle are equal to the corresponding
angles and sides of another triangle,
then the triangles are said to be
congruent.
RHS RULE

• If the hypotenuse and a side of a right-

angled triangle is equivalent to the
hypotenuse and a side of the second
right- angled triangle, then the two right
triangles are said to be congruent by
RHS rule.
SIMILAR TRIANGLES
• Definition: Two triangles are similar if their corresponding angles are
equal and their corresponding sides are proportional.
• Criteria for Similarity:
• AA (Angle-Angle): If two angles of one triangle are equal to two
angles of another triangle, the triangles are similar.
• SSS (Side-Side-Side): If the corresponding sides of two triangles are
in proportion, the triangles are similar.
• SAS (Side-Angle-Side): If one angle of one triangle is equal to one
angle of another triangle and the sides including these angles are in
proportion, the triangles are similar.
HERON’S FORMULA
Calculating the Area of a Triangle
Base and Height: Area=12×base×heightArea=21×base×height
Heron's Formula: For a triangle with sides aa, bb, and cc:
Area=s(s−a)(s−b)(s−c)
Area=s(s−a)(s−b)(s−c)
where s=a+b+c2s=2a+b+c(the semi-perimeter).
REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS
• Real-World Applications of Triangles
• Engineering: Trusses in bridges and buildings.
• Art and Design: Geometric patterns and tiling.
• Navigation: Triangulation for locating positions.
SUMMARY OF TRIANGLES
• Triangles are fundamental shapes in geometry with specific properties.
• They can be classified by sides and angles.
• Understanding their properties and applications is crucial in various
fields.
