ADVISORS Dessalegn A. (MPH in Epidemiology, Assistant professor). Outline • Introduction • Statement of the problem • Significant of the study • Methods • Work plan • Budget • References Introduction; • There is an unacceptably high world-wide prevalence of nutritional rickets, a preventable disabling disease of children. Rickets is the softening and weakening of bones in children, usually because of an extreme and prolonged vitamin D deficiency. Con… • The greatest burden is in Africa, the Middle East and Asia, and, increasingly, in families originating from these countries resident in Europe, Australasia and the Americas. For many children, vitamin D deficiency is the predominant cause and is associated with limited UVB exposure by the mother before and during pregnancy and subsequently by the child . Statement of the Problem • Rickets, a common childhood disease impacting growth, is widespread in low- income countries and ranks among the top five paediatric diseases. Its prevalence and causes are understudied in eastern Ethiopia, prompting a study to assess its extent and associated factors in under-five children at selected public hospitals in the region Significance of this study • This document provides a literature review of nutritional rickets among infants and children, aiming to establish a baseline for future research. It summarizes key public health aspects of rickets, including its burden, and serves as an indicator of rickets prevalence in the Addis Ababa community. Additionally, it provides a foundation for policymakers to develop strategies and interventions for rickets prevention and management. Objective • General Objective • To assess magnitude of rickets and associated factor among under five children in Addis Ababa hospital, Ethiopia on 2024. • Specific Objective • To determine the magnitude of rickets among under five children in Addis Ababa public hospital. • To identify associated factors of rickets among under five children in Addis Ababa public hospital. Methods • An institution-based retrospective-cross-sectional study will be conducted from march15 -April15 ,2024 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Hospital will be a total of 122 participants will be selected using simple random Sampling technique by lottery method. A chart review from chart, pretested and structured questionnaire will be used to collect data. After checking for its completeness the data will be entered into kobocolletv2024.2.4 and then exported to SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) Version 23 for analysis. Con… • Descriptive statistics, including frequency distribution, Percentage, measure of central tendency, and measure of dispersion will be used for describing different variables. • A binary logistic regression will be used to identify the factors associated with magnitude of rickets. Con…. • The bivariable analysis will be carried out for all independent variables with the outcome variable. Variables with a p value of <0.25 in the bivariable analysis will be fitted into multivariable logistic regression model to control the possible effect of confounders. Con… • The strength of association will be measured by odds ratios with a 95% confidence interval. Variables with a p value of <0.05 in the multivariable logistic regression model will be considered as significant factors. Work Plan: • The duration of this project will be from December 01/ 2024 to may 30, 2025. Budget • An estimated Budget will be 23660ETB ACKNOWLEDGEMENT • First and for most, special thanks and praise to God almighty who kept me safe, secured and healthy.
