INTRODUCTION
• In 1989, Dallas Semiconductor created a stainless steel storage
device using the 1-Wire protocol initially called Touch Memory.
• In 1990, it was enhanced and renamed iButton for data storage and
secure transactions.
• Later, Sun Microsystems integrated Java technology into the
iButton, creating the Java Ring.
• Java Ring is a Finger wearable device made of stainless steel.
• It has a 0.6-inch radius / 16 mm in Diameter.
• Equipped with a microprocessor, it offers multiple functionalities
including data storage, authentication, and electronic cash
• When the Java Ring is connected to the
Blue Dot receptor, a connection is
established using the 1-Wire protocol.
• The JVM on the connected system loads the
applet from the iButton’s ROM into the
HOW system’s RAM.
• The applet program runs in the system’s
JAVA RAM, performing a task like authentication or
RINGS verification.
• The applet uses the data stored in the
WORKS iButton's ROM to perform the required task.
• The iButton’s internal battery powers the
device, allowing it to function even when not
connected to external power.
• The system completes the task based on
the applet’s logic and the data stored in the

iButton.
COMPONENTS OF
JAVA RING

Java Ring has 6 components. These

are:
1. Java Virtual Machine.
2. RAM.
3. ROM.
4. Real-Time Clock.
5. iButton.
6. Blue Dot Receptor

1. JAVA VIRTUAL MACHINE

• It's a Piece of software used to recognize java Program(Applets).
• Translate Information into Byte code which can be used by the System.
• Provides a runtime environment for the iButton.
• Ensures platform independence, allowing Java code to run anywhere.

2. RAM
• Java Ring Contains Non-Volatile Random access Memory (NVRAM) of
134KB.

• RAM (Random Access Memory) is used for temporary data

storage.

• It holds data that is actively being used or processed by the iButton.

3. ROM
• Java Ring contains 32KB of ROM.
• It stores data that doesn't change, even when the power is off i,e permanent storage.
• E-commerce & JVM is stored in ROM.
• Operating system handles operations in ibutton, Not supposed to be altered by users.

4. REAL-TIME CLOCK
• It gives the exact time of the day.

• 32 Kilohertz crystal oscillator operates the time.

• Energy provided by lithium backup.

• It runs for more than 10 years with the lithium energy.

5. IBUTTON
• A small, durable computer chip enclosed in a stainless steel casing.
• Communicates via 1-Wire protocol for data transfer.
• Provides functionalities like data storage, identification, and
authentication.
• Used in applications like access control, asset tracking, and time
6. BLUE DOT RECEPTOR
management.
• A device that enables communication between an iButton and a
computer or system.
• Reads and writes data from the iButton using the 1-Wire protocol.
• Equipped with a metal contact point where the iButton is placed.
• Used in applications like authentication, data transfer, and system
access control.

• Increased Storage Capacity
Use cloud storage or smartcards for more data
and edge computing to reduce local storage needs
by processing data nearby.

• Advanced Security
Implement biometrics (fingerprint, face, voice),

FUTURE blockchain for secure verification, and 2FA/MFA for

added security layers.

SCOPE
• Expanded Functionality
Use smartphones or wearables for tasks like
biometric authentication, payments, and health
monitoring through mobile apps.

• Wireless Communication
Enable contactless communication with NFC,
Bluetooth, or RFID for flexible and convenient data
exchange.

• The Java Ring is an innovative wearable device with
versatile applications like data storage, authentication,
and secure payments.
• Its compact design, durability, and integration of Java
technology make it a significant advancement in
wearable computing.

CONCLUSION • Despite limitations, it demonstrates the potential of

combining security and portability in modern devices.
• With future enhancements in security, storage, and
wireless connectivity, the Java Ring could revolutionize
personal authentication and data management.
• It remains an early but impactful step toward the future
of smart wearable technology.
