INTRODUCTION

to
CONIC
SECTIONS
In this lesson, you will be able to:

• Illustrate the different types of conic

section: (circle, parabola, ellipse, and
hyperbola)
CROSS
SECTION
Intersection of
a PLANE and
a SOLID
FIGURE
CONIC SECTION
INTERSECTION OF A PLANE AND A C
one
Observe the moving picture. how are these
conic sections being formed?
CONIC SECTION – CIRCLE
when the plane that
intersects the cone
is horizontal and
does not pass
through the vertex
of the cone
CONIC SECTION – ELLIPSE

when the (tilted)

plane intersecting a
cone at the angle of
its base
CONIC SECTION – PARABOLA

when the plane cuts

the cone parallel to
the side of the
cone.
CONIC SECTION – HYPERBOLA
when a plane
intersects a double
right circular cone at
an angle such that
both halves of the
cone are intersected.

Circles
In this lesson, you will be able to:

• Define a circle; and

• Graph a circle given an equation in center-
radius form.
The CIRCLE
A circle is a conic
section that is formed
by intersecting a cone
with a plane that is
perpendicular to the
axis of the cone.
Look at the circle
with point c(h, k) as
C (h,k)
the center and
radius r>0. A point
p(x, y) is on a circle.
EQUATION OF A CIRCLE
STANDARD EQUATION
OF A CIRCLE

(x - h) + (y - k) = r
2 2 2

where point C (h, k) is the center and r is

the radius.
EXAMPLES:
Give the standard equation of the circle
satisfying the given conditions:

1. CENTER AT THE ORIGIN, RADIUS 4

2. CENTER (-4, 3), RADIUS 2

1. CENTER AT THE ORIGIN, RADIUS 4
𝐶 (0 , 0 )𝑟 =4
(x - h)2 + (y - k) 2 = r2
(x - __ )2 + (y - __ ) 2 = ___2

(x - 0 )2 + (y - 0 ) 2 = 42

x 2 + y 2 = 16
x 2 + y 2 = 16 6

Given the standard form of the equation, find the coordinates of
the center and the radius of each of the following circles

1.

SOLUTION:

Thus, the center is at (-9,1) and r=5

TRY! Given the standard form of the equation, find the
coordinates of the center and the radius of each of the following
circles
