INTRODUCTION
Primary health care is a whole-of-society approach
to health and well-being centered on the needs and
preferences of individuals, families, and
communities. It addresses the broader determinants
of health and focuses on the comprehensive and
interrelated aspects of physical, mental, and social
health and wellbeing.
DEFINITION
“Primary health care is the first level of contact
with the national health system for individuals,
families, and community bringing health care as
close as possible to where people live and work”.

ELEMENTS OF PRIMARY HEALTH CARE
Education concerning prevailing health problems and the
methods of preventing and controlling these problems.
Promotion of food supply and proper nutrition.
Adequate supply of safe water and basic sanitation.
Maternal and child health care, including family
planning.
Immunization against major infectious diseases.
Prevention and control of locally endemic diseases,
Appropriate treatment of common diseases and injuries.
Provision of essential drugs
FACTS AND FIGURES RELATED TO PRIMARY
HEALTH CARE
 All people, everywhere, deserve the right care, right in their community.
This is the fundamental premise of primary health care.
 Primary health care can cover the majority of a person’s health needs
throughout their life including prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and
palliative care.
 At least half of the world’s people still lack full coverage of essential health
services.
 A fit-for-purpose workforce is essential to deliver primary health care, yet
the world has an estimated shortfall of 18 million health workers.
 Of the 30 countries for which data are available, only 8 spend at least US
40 per person on primary health care per year.
 Almost 50% of people still lack some or all essential professionals health
services.
 There will be a short fall of 18 million health care .
