Compatibility Matrix

Interoperability With Windows Server

 Exchange Server fully supports Windows Server 2003 AD
environments. Can use Exchange 5.5 SP3, Exchange 2000
SP2/SP3, and Exchange 2003 with Windows 2003 GCs and DCs.
 Exchange 2003 Server is the only version of Exchange supported on
Windows Server 2003

Permissions Requirements
 Lower Permissions (Full Admin Group
Only) To:
 Install/reinstall
 Upgrade
 Disaster recovery
 …Including cluster nodes!
 Still Need Org Permissions For:
 First server in Org
 First server in Domain
 First server in Admin Group
 Servers with an SRS
Deploying Exchange Servers
Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003
 The recommended route for Exchange 5.5 servers to get to
Exchange 2003 is to install an Exchange 2003 server into the site
and move mailboxes.

Connection Agreements
 Makes the process easier to understand
 Ensures all needed CAs are created
 Validates that objects have replicated
Deploying Exchange Servers
Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003
 The Exchange 2000 Server must be upgraded to
Exchange 2003 first. Then the operating system can be
upgraded.

Upgrading Exchange 2000
 Requires Exchange 2000 SP3/Windows 2000 SP3
 After upgrade to Exchange 2003, you can upgrade
to Windows 2003 if desired
 You don’t need to reinstall anything
 System Attendant makes changes on start-up
 IIS 6 Dedicated Application Mode
 Metabase modifications
 Remove any MIS components from server
 But MIS can still point at Exchange 2000/2003 servers
for coexistence
 EIM and ECS upgrade considerations

Server Consolidation
 Server Consolidation for Exchange
2003 Similar to Exchange 2000
 Exchange 5.5 customers will see similar
consolidation opportunities for Exchange
2000/2003 (using Outlook 2000/2002/2003)
 Exchange 2000 customers won’t see
additional server consolidation
improvements from Exchange 2003 alone
 Additional server consolidation possible if
using OWA
Network/Site Consolidation
 Network Bandwidth Reduction Possible Using
Outlook 2003 Cached Exchange Mode
 Approx. 30% to 40% network savings
 End users are shielded from network outages
 Local searches faster than previous clients
 RPC/HTTP removes RAS/VPN overhead
 Site Consolidation for Exchange 5.5 & 2000:
 For Outlook 2000/2002, no site consolidation
opportunity
 For Outlook 2003, it depends on:
 size of organization, Public Folder and Free Busy
usage, and Outlook 2003 features enabled/disabled
(Cached Mode, OAB size, drizzle mode)
 Consolidation possible for 100% OWA (GZip)
Exchange Deployment Tools
Core Exchange Deployment Scenarios
 Structured Guidance
 Prescriptive guide to walk a customer through
the entire Exchange deployment
 Preparation Tools (examples following)
 Tools to scan topology and give
recommendations
 Validation Tools (examples following)
 Tools to help proactively identify issues that
will prevent Exchange setup from completing
 Customers can be confident that Exchange
is set up correctly and avoid issues that
would have required them to call PSS.

Active Directory Connector
 Need to Verify the Following:
 Exchange 2000 post-SP3 ADC hotfix
required if you want existing ADCs to run
after Exchange 2003 ADC is installed (post-
beta 2)
 All ADCs must upgrade to Exchange 2003
version before first Exchange 2003 server
can be installed
 ADC and Core schema files are identical

Mailbox-Server Migrations
Mailbox-Server Migrations

 More Reliable and Robust

Corrupt messages will not fail bulk migrations.
 Increased Performance
Multithreaded to move more mailboxes at one time

 Easier to Schedule
Can specify cutoff time to enable off-hour moves
 Easier to plan mailbox migrations from
Exchange 5.5 during off hours and without
an administrator present … BIG COST
SAVINGS
