U-TURN TACTICS 2024
[3-1-2 / 2-3-1]
The 3-1-2 formation
• It is an extremely attack minded formation despite having 3 at the
back, the lack of midfielders causes the left and right wing back to join
the midfield later on to have a numerical advantage. The passes are
played short and the formation is fluid, meaning players are allowed
to be in unrestricted places. However, for the formation to work they
do need to be in specific zones and each player plays a special role.
• This formation requires players with high-quality of passes, off-the-
ball movement, stamina and workrate to function properly.
The 3-1-2 in build up
• The 3-1-2 builds up from the back, playing shorter passes to the
wingbacks and centre back until the opposition presses, once the
opposition presses there’s a gap between their midfield and defense
which is favourable since we have 2 striker. One of the striker drops
into that space to collect the ball and either releases it for the other
striker or goes for goal himself.
• Accurate passes are CRUCIAL as any mistake can be punished severely
in the backline. Players need to position themselves well before they
receive the ball so they don’t get trapped by opposition’s press.
Always have minimum of 2 available passing lines.
The 3-1-2 in possession
• Once the opposition forwards and midfielders press your backline,
aim for one of the free strikers or progress thru the pitch using your
wingbacks, once the ball is starting to progress, flood the central and
the side of the pitch the wingback is from.
• For ex- if the right back is progressing the ball up the pitch, the CB,
CM, ST(s), will flood one side of the pitch
• This will lure opposition defense into one side while you can quickly
break this defense with short and quick passes, keep one player on
the other side of the pitch to switch the play. [This role is usually the
centre-mid or wingback]
The 3-1-2 in attack
• Once the attacking phase has begun, a team of 4 must form a square
in one flank/side of the pitch while one player stays at the opposite
wing who’s gonna be completely unmarked as their defense will only
focus on the attacking 4.
• From here, you can open up the play by passing to your ST or going
for goal from an angle.
• If the opposition covers the flank well, use your numerical superiority
to break their defense with quick and short passes.
The 3-1-2 in defense
• They say that a strong defense is the strongest attack but it’s the
opposite for 3-1-2, the 3-1-2 is a team that is good both on the ball
and on counter however the defensive structure is hard to form and
maintain in this formation.
• If the ball is played centrally, look to get the back 3 of RWB,LWB AND
CB together, the CM should cover the space infront of goal as a screen
so long range shots are blocked, the CB and one of the wingbacks
need to focus on the strikers while only ONE wingback is gonna take
care of wingers.
• A detailed drawing will be provided to guide you in these scenarios.
