What is a Network Topology?

 A network topology is the physical and logical arrangement of nodes

and connections in a network. Nodes usually include devices such as
switches, routers and software with switch and router features.
Network topologies are often represented as a graph.
 Network topologies describe the arrangement of networks and the
relative location of traffic flows. Administrators can use network
topology diagrams to determine the best placements for each node and
the optimal path for traffic flow. With a well-defined and planned-out
network topology, an organization can more easily locate faults and fix
issues, improving its data transfer efficiency.
 Network geometry can be defined as the physical topology and
Why is Network Topology Important?
• Network topology plays a major role in how a network functions.
Namely, the topology has a direct effect on network functionality.
Choosing the right topology can help increase performance, as a
properly chosen and maintained network topology increases energy
efficiency and data transfer rates.
• A well-defined network topology makes it easier for network admins to
locate faults, troubleshoot issues and to allocate network resources.
Diagrams are an important reference point in helping to diagnose
network issues, as they can represent physical and logical layouts.
Different types of Network Topologies
What is Bus Topology?
 Bus topology is a setup of a network where network devices, computers or nodes are directly
linked to a single cable, or we can say with a common link. An RJ-45 network cable or coaxial
cable is preferred to link them, depending on the type of system network card.
 Bus topology works in a simple fashion. All devices are connected to a single communication
line called a “bus.” When a device sends data, it is broadcasted along the bus and can be
received by any nodes. Each node checks the destination address on the information packet
until the intended node is found.
 A bus topology is a topology for a Local Area Network (LAN) in which all the nodes are
connected to a single cable. The cable to which the nodes connect is called a "backbone". If the
backbone is broken, the entire segment fails. Bus topologies are relatively easy to install and
don't require much cabling compared to the alternatives.
What is Star Topology?
 A star topology is a topology for a Local Area Network (LAN) in which all nodes
are individually connected to a central connection point, like a hub or a switch. A
star takes more cable than e.g. a bus, but the benefit is that if a cable fails, only
one node will be brought down.
 In a star topology, the central hub acts like a server and the connecting nodes act
like clients. When the central node receives a packet from a connecting node, it
can pass the packet on to other nodes in the network. A star topology is also
known as a star network.
 Star networks require a point-to-point connection between the central node and
connecting devices, unlike WIFI mesh systems. To improve communication
between the devices on the network, the central node can provide signal
reconditioning and amplification services.
What is Tree Topology?
 A Tree Topology is a special type of structure where many connected
elements are arranged like the branches of a tree. For example, tree
topologies are frequently used to organize the computers in a
corporate network, or the information in a database.
 In a tree topology, there can be only one connection between any two
connected nodes.
 In computer networking, tree topology is a type of network topology that
resembles a tree. In a tree topology, there is one central node (the
“trunk”), and each node is connected to the central node through a single
path. Nodes can be thought of as branches coming off of the trunk.
What is Ring Topology?
 A ring topology is a network configuration where device connections create a
circular data path. Each networked device is connected to two others, like points on a circle.
Together, devices in a ring topology are called a ring network.
 In a ring network, packets of data travel from one device to the next until they reach their
destination. Most ring topologies allow packets to travel only in one direction, called
a unidirectional ring network. Others permit data to move in either direction,
called bidirectional.
 The major disadvantage of a ring topology is that if any individual connection in the ring is
broken, the entire network is affected.
 Ring topologies may be used in either LANs (local area networks) or WANs (wide area
networks). Depending on the network card used in each computer of the ring topology,
a coaxial cable or an RJ-45 network cable is used to connect computers together.
What is Mesh Topology?

 A mesh topology is a network setup where each computer and network device is
interconnected with one another. This topology setup allows most transmissions
to be distributed even if one of the connections goes down.
 It is a topology commonly used for wireless networks. Below is a visual example
of a simple computer setup on a network using a mesh topology.
 A mesh topology is a type of computer network in which each node (computer or
other device) is connected to every other node in the network. This type of
network is often used in large organizations or companies because it can handle a
large amount of data traffic and can be easily expanded.
What is Hybrid Topology

Hybrid Topology is a type of network topology in which two or more different topologies
are integrated or combined to lay out a network. In layman's terms, hybrid topology is the
combination of two or more networks.
A hybrid network topology is an interconnection of two or more basic network
topologies, each of which contains its own nodes. The resulting topology will exhibit
characteristics of all the constituent topologies, thereby limiting the inherent weaknesses
of each topology.
A hybrid topology is a type of network topology that uses two or more differing
network topologies. These topologies can include a mix of bus topology, mesh
topology, ring topology, star topology, and tree topology.
The choice to use a hybrid topology over a standard topology depends on the needs of a
business, school, or the users. The number of computers, their location, and desired
network performance are all factors in the decision.
