Gifted and talented tutorial material

 Gifted and talented children are those identified by professionally qualified

persons who by virtue of outstanding abilities are capable of high
performance.
 Children capable of high performance include those with demonstrated
achievement and/or potential ability in any of the following areas singly or in
combination:
 General intellectual aptitude.
 Specific academic aptitude.
 Creative or productive thinking.
 Leadership ability.
 Visual and performing arts.
Con…
 Giftedness consists of an interaction among three basic clusters of
human traits:
 These clusters being above average general abilities, high levels
of task commitment, and high levels of creativity.
 Gifted and talented children are those possessing or capable of
developing this composite set of traits and applying them to any
potentially valuable area of human performance.
ADAPTING PEDAGOGY FOR GIFTED STUDENTS
 We can support gifted and talented children through the following
approaches and strategies.
A. Differentiated curriculum
In is an instructional program that is flexible enough to meet
individual learning needs.
The program emphasizes cognitive processing, abstract thinking,
reasoning, creative problem solving and self-monitoring.
Con…
B. Enrichment
 This is addition of topics or development of skills not usually
included in the traditional curriculum.
 It may have the following practical aspects.
 Students might spend a small portion of time each week working
with instructional materials that enhance creativity or critical
thinking skills.
 Gifted children could be allowed to pursue and study a particular
academic subject, or a topic in depth on an individual basis.
 Gifted students could be paired with adults who guide them in
applying knowledge to real life situations.

C. Acceleration
This is moving students through a curriculum or years of schooling
in a shorter period of time than usual. Acceleration may have the
following forms:
 Early school admission: The child is allowed to enter
kindergarten at a younger age than normal.
 Skipping grades: The child’s learning is accelerated by
completely eliminating one semester or one grade in school.
Con…
 Telescoping grades: The child covers the standard material, but
in less time. For example, a three year program would be taught
over two years.
 Advanced placement: The student takes course of college credit
while still in high school.
 Early college admission: An extraordinarily advanced student
may enter college at 13, 14, or 15 years of age.
Con…
Acceleration can occur in a number of ways.
• Subject acceleration: within the same class, to
another class, to a streamed class for one or more
subjects or to another year level for one or more
subjects
• Year level acceleration: advancement to a higher
grade or year level for all subjects.
• Concurrent enrolment: two learning institutions
are accessed at the same time by the student.
• Compacting: where learning is compressed into a
shorter time.
Con…

D. Eclectic approach
It is a comprehensive program, intended to meet all the educational
needs of gifted children. It combines enrichment as well as
accelerated features in to student’s education programs and
includes counseling services.
Ways to Support Your Gifted Child

1. Encourage them to do things they’re bad at

This is probably the advice given most frequently to parents of
gifted children, and yet, it can be among the hardest tips to follow.
It doesn’t come naturally to us – especially if we have other children
who are less gifted – to encourage our child to do things they’re bad
at.
Con…
2. Give them the tools they need to succeed
This is something that you would do for any child, regardless of their
level of ability, but for gifted children it can take a bit more thought.
3. Get help if you need it
Remember that being gifted is in many countries considered a
‘special education need’, just as being autistic or having learning
difficulties might be.
4. Don’t assume they’ll always be gifted
It’s natural to think that once a genius, always a genius, and it is the
case that many gifted children grow into gifted teenagers who

5. Provide intellectual challenges

Gifted children can be prone to coasting, which makes complete
sense. After all, even if their teacher is unusually good at providing
work for all ability levels, they have probably had to put less effort
in than their peers to produce good work.
6. Avoid comparisons where possible
It’s natural to compare yourself to others, no matter your age, and
children are especially prone to doing this in unsubtle ways when
they’re younger.
Con…

7. Be open-minded about their choice of friends

One of the things that can be most difficult about growing up gifted
is being isolated from your peers.
8. Be honest with them about their abilities
Some parents of gifted children endeavor to keep a full
understanding of their abilities from them, such as withholding the
results of an IQ test, in case it leads to big-headedness.
Cognitive traits of gifted and talented

 giftedness is typically reflected by a significantly higher IQ than

their peers.
This high IQ is demonstrated through advanced language
development, abstract thinking, and advanced memory skills.
As for other cognitive characteristics, gifted children vary in their
traits and abilities.
For instance, some gifted children are:
 Very observant,
 Extremely curious, and largely independent
Con…

 Other common characteristics include being a voracious and early

reader, a critical thinker, and a natural problem-solver.
 Some gifted kids may even have a wide variety of interests, long
attention spans, and excellent reasoning skills.
 Although may be able to quickly and easily see relationships
between ideas, objects or facts, and have fluent and flexible
thinking.
Con..

 especially if the gifted child also has a learning disability or is an

underachiever. The only way to truly determine if your child is
gifted is to measure their IQ with an experienced tester
The model is based on five interactive dimensions:
Orientation – getting to know the structure and expectations of the
programme
Individual development – underpins the programme by teaching
cognitive, emotional and social skills, as well as covering the
concepts and attitudes needed to be lifelong learners
Con…
Enrichment activities – allow learners to begin to explore different
concepts and ideas, as well as developing their own content,
processes and products
Seminars – the teacher moves into the role of facilitator and gives
learners the chance to ‘teach’ other learners in, for example,
traditional seminars or Ignite Presentations
In-depth study – in small groups or as individuals, allowing
exploration of an area of passion.
