CLASSIFICATION OF NPP SYSTEMS AND
COMPONENTS
BY SAFETY CLASSES (NP-001-15)
Four Safety Classes of S&C are identified depending on their influence on NPP safety
Safety Class 1
includes the fuel elements and NPP S&C whose failures are initiating events of accidents leading to fuel element damage
with exceedance of maximum design limits under design functioning of safety systems
Safety Class 2
includes the following NPP S&C that are not classified as Safety Class 1
S&C whose failures are initiating events resulting in damage of the fuel elements without exceeding the maximum design
limit with the safety systems performing their design functions considering their failure number specified for design basis
accidents in above mentioned systems
safety system components whose single failures result in violation of design limits established for the design basis
accidents when such accidents occur
Safety Class 3
includes NPP safety important S&C that are not classified as Safety Classes 1 and 2
Safety Class 4
includes S&C of NPP normal operation that do not affect safety and are not classified as Safety Classes 1, 2 and 3. S&C, that
are used to manage beyond design basis accidents and are not classified as Safety Classes 1, 2 and 3, are also belonged to
Safety Class 4
Safety Classes of NPP S&C are assigned by NPP Designer

Three Groups are identified depending on consequences of equipment and piping failure or damage
Group A
Equipment and piping, belonging to Safety Class 1
Group B
Equipment and piping, belonging to Safety Class 2
Equipment and piping, belonging to Safety Class 3, in case if its failure or damage leads to
irremovable by the regular systems of NPP leakage of the coolant contacting with the fuel elements
malfunction of any safety system
Group C
Other Safety Class 3 equipment and piping, whose failure or damage leads to
removable by the regular systems of NPP leakage of the coolant contacting with the fuel elements
safety systems actuating
malfunction of a channel of any safety system
excess of the set values of the maximum permissible emissions or of the permissible radioactive discharges, or of the
permissible radioactive contamination level of the NPP workrooms
The specific group for equipment and piping is set by NPP Designer

BY SEISMIC CATEGORIES (NP-031-01)
Seismic Category I includes
1st and 2nd Safety Class NPP S&C
safety systems
normal operating systems and their components, failure of which , under seismic impacts up to the MDE, can lead to
radioactive product release in the environment in the amount exceeding the values established for a DBA
buildings, facilities, components and their parts the mechanical damage whereof under seismic impacts up to the MDE
due to power or temperature impact on the above mentioned components and systems can result in their failure in
operation
other systems and components whose ranking to the Seismic Category I is justified by the design
Seismic Category II shall be assigned to systems and their components (not ranked to the Seismic Category I) the failure
in operation whereof, separately or together with other S&C, can lead to interruption in electric power and heat
generation as well as to 3rd Safety Class S&C which are not ranked to the Seismic Category I
Maximum Design Earthquake (MDE) is the earthquake on NPP site with average recurrence of 10000 years
Project Earthquake (PE) is the earthquake on NPP site with average recurrence of 1000 years
