01 Introduction
• Management has been described as a social process
involving responsibility for economical and effective
planning & regulation of operation of an enterprise in
the fulfillment of given purposes.
• Different experts have classified functions of management.
• But the most widely accepted are functions of management given by
KOONTZ and O’DONNEL i.e. Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Directing
and Controlling.
• The five functions are:
• Planning involves the planning of decision making.
• Organizing includes appropriate coordination between planning and
resources.
• Staffing :The main purpose of staffing is to put right man/woman on
right job
• Directing: the process of motivating, communicating,
instructing, leading, and supervising employees in order to
ensure that they are working towards the accomplishment of
organizational goals
• Controlling is related to monitoring and evaluation

Definition

• Organizing is the function of management


that involves developing an organizational
structure and allocating human resources to
ensure the accomplishment of objectives.
Advantages
• Ensuring that all workers are working towards the same set of
objectives.
• Establishing the roles and duties of each person in the company.
• Establishing procedures for achieving business objectives.
• Evaluating the outcomes, soliciting input, and making adjustments as
necessary.
• Determining the most efficient use of available resources.
• Having the ability to adapt.

03 Staffing
Definition

Staffing is the process of


acquiring, training, and
retaining qualified individuals to
fill positions within an
organization. It involves
identifying staffing needs,
recruiting suitable candidates,
and ensuring the development
of employees.
Advantages:
1. Skilled Workforce:Staffing aims to bring in individuals with the necessary
skills and qualifications, enhancing the overall competency of the workforce.
2. Increased Productivity: Proper staffing ensures that each position is filled
by a competent individual, contributing to higher productivity and efficiency.
3. Team Building: Staffing involves creating a team that complements each
other's skills, fostering a collaborative and effective working environment.
Disadvantages
• 1. Costly: Recruitment and training processes can be
expensive, impacting the organization's budget.
• 2. Time-Consuming:Finding the right candidates and
training them takes time, which might delay the
fulfillment of critical roles.
Limitations

• 1. Dependence on External Factors:Economic conditions, job market


trends, and other external factors can impact the success of staffing
efforts.
• 2. Turnover Challenges: High turnover rates can pose challenges,
requiring continuous efforts in recruitment and training
04 Controlling
Introduction
• Controlling involves ensuring that performance does not deviate from
standards. Controlling consists of three steps, which include :
• (1) establishing performance standards.
• (2) comparing actual performance against standard.
• (3) taking corrective action when necessary.
05 Summary
• In summary, Management is the process of coordinating resources
and activities within an organization to achieve goals. For example,
organizing provide a systematic framework that enhances the
structure and coordination.
• Secondly, Effective staffing ensures that the right people with the
necessary skills are in the right positions, contributing to overall
productivity and success.
• Thirdly, controlling is a vital management function which focuses on
ensuring that individuals are suitable for the established plans and
objectives and also compare their performance against the
organization requirement.
• Finally, all functions of management are important as they help
optimize the efficiency of the organization.
