Lesson 4: Practical Apple

Variation
Can you remember how to draw a
graph showing a normal
distribution?
The most common value
is the middle value in
the range.

When we plot
continuous variation it
usually forms a normal
distribution.

The further away from the

middle, the fewer
individuals will have that
• All the apples that you
eat are the same
species.
• There are many different
types of apple and these
are called varieties.
• Different varieties often
have different
characteristics, which
are an example of
inherited variation.
• A difference in mass is
an example of variation.
Compare how two varieties of apple
compare in mass
• Make a note of the names of your two varieties of apple.
Keep the varieties in two separate piles so they don’t
get mixed up. If they have labels on them, you could
leave the labels on apples of one variety and remove
them from the other variety.
• Lift up each apple and feel how heavy it is. Write down
which variety of apple you think is the heaviest.
• Use a balance to measure the mass of each apple from
one variety and record your results in a table.
• Repeat step C for the other variety.
Analysis of results
• Calculate the average mass of each apple variety.
• Calculate the range of values for each variety.
• Record in your data in a graph – what type of graph will
you draw – why?

• Was your prediction correct?

• Explain why measuring the mass of the apples is more
accurate than lifting the apples and guessing!

Discussion and
Explanation
All the apples of a particular
variety do not have exactly
the same genetic
information.

(a) Explain why apple seeds

from one variety do not have
identical genetic information
as apple seeds from another
variety.
(b) Apart from genetic
information, what else can
cause apples of each variety
to have different masses?
Evaluation
Do you think you have enough results to be able to
say that one variety of apples is always heavier
than the other? Explain your reasoning.

(a)How could you make your conclusion more

reliable?

(b) Suggest another scientific question that this

investigation has made you think about.
This lesson, I have remembered how
to:
• identify and explain inherited and
environmental variation
• calculate means
• compare qualitative and quantitative
methods
• evaluate my evidence
