RENEWABLE ENERGY
TECHNOLOGIES
● My chosen technology was renewable
energy technologies. Renewable
energy is energy that can be sustained,
meaning it can't run out. eg. The sun.
Three types of renewable energies are
solar, hydro and wind energy.
IN DEPTH ANALYSIS
Solar Energy is converting energy from the sun into electricity. This is one of thefastest-growing sources
accessible. Sunlight is the most available type of energy we have. Just one hour of energy from the sun can
power up the entire earth for one year. The amount of solar energy we use can vary according to what time
of day it is e.g. morning or night and also the season of the year. Mass PV production has made solar power
more accessible. Sunlight hits the panel absorbing the sunlight and processing its energy and producing
energy. Solar energy can be very impactful to society and businesses. Solar PV produces clean energy, it is
not noisy and this energy diversifies energy sources, i efficiency and solar energy also save money.
Furthermore, hydro energy is also an example of renewable energy. Whilst solar energy is the fastest
growing, hydro energy is the oldest and largest source of renewable energy. Hydro energy uses the natural
flow of moving waterhence the use of the word hydro. This type of energy is easy to obtain causing the
usage scale to be quite large. Hydro energy is renewable because water evaporates into clouds and recycles
backinto earth as precipitation. Thewater cycle is constantly recharging. It generates electricity by
diversion and pumped storage hydropower. Adding generators can help prevent floods and also help water
crops. This is helpful because it generates a cleaner renewable source. Lastly, wind energy is the most
developed renewable energysource. Thekinetic energy in the air is used to produce energy. Awind turbine
uses the energy and transforms it electrically. Wind farms can be useful to socirty and businesses because
they can power a whole city. This is also a clean energy source. This helps society because it reduces
greenhouse gases and preseves the environment.
“We know we’ll run out of dead dinosaurs to mine for fuel
and have to use sustainable energy eventually, so why
not go renewable now and avoid increasing risk of
climate catastrophe? Betting that science is wrong
and oil companies are right is the dumbest
experiment in history by -Elon
far.” Musk, Founder, Tesla
Future Impact
Trinidad and Tobago had the title of largest oil and gas producer in the Caribbean however production started to decline rapidly. The
gas production decline affected feedstock with plants being idle or shut down. It will take time for these projects to be active and thus
their benefits will not be immediately effective. Global warming driven by an increase in greenhouse gases led governments to
implement policies and practices that reduce carbon emissions. Trinidad relies mostly on hydrocarbon exports. The county’s exports
could potentially become less competitive causing Trinidad and Tobago to lose it's market share which would negatively impact
foreign exchange. Even tho the emission of greenhouse gases is not major be of the size of the island, we still face some devastating
and life threatening impacts of climate change. Addressing climate change is crucial for limiting global temperature rise, protecting
ecosystems, promoting long term sustainability and enhancing quality of life.
Ways renewable energy can impact the country in 20 years are having the government lead by example. If this happens people can
follow to suit. The government can also make this easier by adding renewable energy installations in government buildings including
hospitals, medical clinic and schools. Another way that can be impactful is education and awareness creation by fairs workshops,
media and micro marketing. These policy measures will need to be taken in order for the country to have a positive impact in the next
20 years rather than a negative way. Appropriate policy measures will be needed to maximize the opportunities and challenges facing
Trinidad and Tobago energy sector. In the near-term continuing efforts to reduce domestic consumption of natural gas, including
through the promotion of energy efficiency and boosting the installation of renewable energy will help maintain supplies. Planned
electricity tariffs adjustments will promote efficient energy usage by consumers and businesses while also relieving some fiscal
pressures. As a nation, Trinidad and Tobago is heavily reliant on gas and oil exports so in order for the country to have a positive
impact embracing renewable energy technologies such as the ones mentioned previously; solar, hydro and wind. Investing in this can
also give the country more job opportunities for those in need. This also economically helps Trinidad and Tobago encouraging an
inflock of foreign investments futhermore giving the island more recognition.
