• Conclusion and Q&A
What is a MAC
Address?
•A MAC address is a unique identifier assigned to network
interfaces for communications on the physical network
segment.

•It is used to identify devices in local networks (LAN) and is

assigned to network hardware, like Wi-Fi cards or Ethernet
adapters.
Structure of a MAC Address
• Format:
• MAC addresses are 48-bit (6 bytes) in length.
• Written as 12 hexadecimal digits, typically separated by
colons or hyphens (e.g. : 00:14:22:01:23:45

• Example Breakdown:
• First 3 bytes (OUI): Identifies the manufacturer
• Last 3 bytes: Unique to the device
Function of a MAC Address
• Roles:
• Identification in local network communications.
• Enables data transmission from one device to
another within a local area network (LAN).

• Layer 2 in OSI Model:

• MAC addresses operate at the Data Link Layer of
the OSI model
Types of MAC Addresses
• Unicast: One-to-one communication (e.g., data sent from one

PC to another).
• Multicast: One-to-many communication (e.g., streaming
video
to a group).
• Broadcast: One-to-all communication within the same
network (e.g. , ARP requests).

Security Considerations
Potential Risks :-
• MAC Spoofing: Attackers clone MAC
addresses to bypass filters.
• Eavesdropping: Network traffic can be
intercepted if MAC addresses are
exposed.
• Mitigation Measures:
• Dynamic ARP Inspection (DAI).
• Port security features on switches.
