What is virtual Box?
 it is an open source virtualization solution suitable for most

laptop and desktop computers. It is the ability to run one or

most virtual computers on your physical computer.

 They are “virtual” because they do not exist physically but

WHAT? rather software is used to emulate the hardware.

 Oracle Corporation developed a virtual box, and it is also

known as VB. It acts like a hypervisor for X86 machines.

 We can use this solution to deploy as many virtual machines

as the host architecture has the resources for.

 Originally VirtualBox was developed by a
company called innotek and they
produced a no cost edition and then
made it open source.

 They were bought by Sun Microsystems

in 2008, who in turn were bought by
Oracle in 2010. So today it is officially
known as Oracle VM VirtualBox. WHO?
 Whilst Oracle have continued with the
original www.virtualbox.org website and
kept it mostly open source, they have
created a number of pre-built VMs that
you can download and they are
configured with Oracle technology, very
handy. page 4
WHEN?
 Less Hardware Required: VirtualBox allows you to run multiple operating
systems on a single physical machine, reducing the need for additional hardware.

 Isolation: Each virtual machine operates in its own environment, isolated from the
host system and other VMs

 Testing Software: Developers and testers can use VirtualBox to run different
software applications on various operating systems. This helps identify
compatibility issues and ensure that applications function as intended across
different environments.

 Browser Testing: Web developers can use VirtualBox to test websites across
different browsers and operating systems.

 Test Builds: When developing software, it's essential to test new builds before
deployment. VirtualBox enables developers to create snapshots of their virtual

HOW?
 Download: Go to the
VirtualBox website and
download the latest
version.
 Install: Follow the
simple installation
steps for your
operating system.
 Create a VM: Use the
wizard to set up a new
virtual machine.

Runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and
Solaris; can virtualize almost any
modern OS.
 Cost-Free
Open-source and free, making it ideal
for individuals, students, and small
businesses.
 Snapshots
Save and revert to the virtual
machine’s state at any time for easy
recovery.
 Flexible Networking Options
Supports various configurations like
bridged, NAT, or host-only networks.
 Support for Multiple Guest OSes
PROS
Run various operating systems,
including Linux, Windows, macOS,
Solaris, and FreeBSD.
 Seamless Mode
Integrates guest OS applications
directly into the host desktop for
enhanced usability.

 Less Efficient than Hardware
Virtualization
As a Type 2 hypervisor, it has performance
overhead compared to bare-metal
hypervisors.
 Resource Sharing
VMs share host resources, which can lead
CONS
to performance degradation when multiple
VMs are active.
 Limited Advanced Features
Lacks enterprise-level features like live
migration and high availability.
 Limited Hardware Access
Virtual machines don’t have direct
hardware access, affecting performance
for resource-intensive tasks.
 Security Concerns
Vulnerabilities in the host OS can impact
the security of the virtualized
