USMLE STEP-1 OVERVIEW
• Assesses whether you understand and can
apply important concepts of the sciences basic
to the practice of medicine.
• Ensures mastery of not only the sciences that
provide a foundation for the safe and
competent practice of medicine in the present,
but also the scientific principles required for
maintenance of competence through lifelong
learning.
OVERVIEW CONTD
• Constructed according to an integrated content
outline that organizes basic science material
along two dimensions: system and process.
FORMAT
• One-day examination.
• Divided into seven 60-minute blocks and
administered in one 8-hour testing session.
• The number of questions per block on a given
examination form may vary, but will not
exceed 40.
• The total number of items on the overall
examination form will not exceed 280.
FORMAT CONTD.
• The examination also includes a minimum
allotment of 45 minutes of break time and a
15-minute optional tutorial.
• The amount of time available for breaks may
be increased by finishing a block of test items
or the optional tutorial before the allotted time
expires.
CONTENT OUTLINE
• All USMLE examinations are constructed
from an integrated content outline.
• Test questions are classified in one of 18 major
areas, depending on whether they focus on
concepts and principles that are important
across organ systems or within individual
organ systems.

SCORING SYSTEM
• USMLE Step 1 score reporting transitioned
from a numeric score and pass/fail outcome to
pass/fail only.
• All Step 1 exam score outcomes will be
reported as pass/fail for exams
administered on or after January 26, 2022.

Dedicated study period: 2-3 months
NBME and Free120 score- 75% to 80%
Exam was not easy!
I suggest-
1) Don’t memorize anything, apply UWORLD concepts to your
clinical practice.
2) Limit resources to as less as possible. Human brain has
limited capacity to retain things, know your max
3) Be easy about the study process
4) Prepare yourself for 8 hours marathon well in advance for the
test day by taking practice tests
5) Exercise, meditate, read good books to keep yourself
motivated.
