REVIEW OF LINEAR EQUATION
The linear equations in one variable is an
equation which is expressed in the form of ax +
b = 0, where a and b are two integers, and x is a
variable and has only one solution.
For example, 2x+3=8 is a linear equation having a
single variable in it.

MATH UNLOCKED!
Linear equations in two
variables are equations which can be
expressed as Ax + By + C = 0, where A, B and
C areGeneral
real numbers and both a, and b are not
Standard
Form
Ax + By + C = 0 zero.
Form
Ax + By = C
The solution of such equations is a pair of values for x
and y which makes both sides of the equation equal.
The symbols x and y are variables that represents any
number that will satisfy the equation.
Check this out

2x + 3y = 32
In standard form Ax + By = C,
where a = 2 ; b= 3 and c = 32
• The equation 2x +3y = 32 is an example of a linear equation in
two variables. This equation will only be true if we can find an
ordered pair (x,y) that will satisfy the equation.

• Every linear equation in two variables has infinitely many

solutions which can be represented on a certain line
Identifying Linear equations in
Two variables or not.
1. 5x = 10 + 3y
Write in standard form; ax + by = c
5x =10 + 3y
5x – 3y = 10 ; a = 5 ; b = -3 ; c = 10
Therefore , 5x = 10 + 3y is a linear equation in 2
variables.
2. y = 4x + 9
Write in standard form; ax + by = c
Identifying Linear equations in
Two variables or not.

3. 3x2– y = 9 Not a linear equation in 2 variables because

the exponent of the variable x is 2.

It follows the pattern ax +by = c, therefore ,

4. it is a linear equation in two variables.
Where a =
b = -5 and
c = -11

Solution of a linear equation is

ordered pairs that make the
equation true.
Example 1: Which of the following ordered pairs will make the
equation
2x + 3y = 32 true?
a.( 4, 10)
Solutio Solutiob. (10, 4)
x = 4 and y = x = 10 and y
n: n:
10 =4
2x + 3y = 2x + 3y =
32 32
2(4) + 3(10) = 2(10) + 3(4) =
32 32
8 + 30 = 20
True+ 12
False
32 = 32
Therefore, (4,10) is not a Therefore, (10,4) is
32 =
solution38 = a solution of 2x + 3y = 32
32
32 of 2x + 3y = 32.
Example 2. Determine if the given ordered pairs are
solutions of x + 4y = 7.
a. ( -1 , 2) b. ( 0, - 1)

Solution:x = -1 and y = 2 Solution: x = 0 and y = -1

x + 4y = 7 x + 4y = 7
-1 + 4(2) = 7 0 + 4(-1) = 7
-1 + 8 = 7 0+-4=7
7=7 -4 = 7
True False
(-1, 2) is a solution (0, -1) is not a
of x + 4y = 7. solution of x + 4y =
7.
Determine if the given ordered pairs are
solutions of 5x + 3y = 30.
a. ( 0, 10 ) b. ( 9 , - 2) c. ( 6,

Finding solutions of
Linear Equations in Two
Variables
How do we find the solution/s of
a linear equation in two
variables?
Example # 1.
Find three solutions of 4x + y = 12.
If x = 0 If x = 1 If x= 3
Example # 1.
Find three solutions of 4x + y = 12.
If x = 0 If x = 1 If x= 3
4x + y =12 4x + y =12 4x + y =12
4(0) +y=12 4(1) +y=12 4(3) +y=12
0+y = 12 4+y = 12 12+y = 12
y = 12 y = 12- 4 y = 12 – 12
y= 8 y= 0
Therefore ( 0, 12) is a Therefore ( 1, 8) is a Therefore ( 3, 0) is a
solution solution solution
x y (x,y)
You can also list the solutions in a 0 12 (0,12)
table of values as shown below. 1 8 (1,8)
3 0 (3,0)
Example # 2. x y (x,y)
1
Refer to the table on the right. Given the value 8
of x or y, find the three solutions of 3x – y + 2 3
=If0x = 1 If y = 8 If x= 3
Let us check Example # 2. x y (x,y)
1 5 (1,5)
2 8 (2,8)
The three solutions of 3x – y + 2 = 0
3 11 (3,11
)
If x = 1 If y = 8 If x= 3
Summary
How can you identify if the equation is Linear Equation
in 2 variables or not?
-It consists of 2 different variables both raised to the
first power
- No variables appear in the denominator of a fraction
- No two variables are part of the same term

How can you find the solutions of Linear Equations?

-To find the solution to any linear equation in two
variables, assign a particular value of x or y, then
substitute to the given equation. Write your answer in
ordered pairs as ( x , y )
