WHAT IS MULTIGRADE TEACHING?

• MULTI means plenty, many, or more than one. The word


GRADE means level. Therefore Multigrade means many grade.
• Multigrade Teaching is a situation in which one teacher has to
teach two or more grades, all at the same time. It happens in
schools where number of teachers is less than the number of
grade levels offered.
• Some multigrade teachers are teaching two grades in one
classroom, but some are teaching three or four grades
depending on the number of learners

WHY IS MULTIGRADE TEACHING IMPORTANT?

• The cognitive development and self-esteem of both younger and


older students are improved. Strong Teacher-Student Relationship:
Lengthier time with the same teacher can increase trust,
understanding of expectations, and positive relationships between
teacher and students, as well as teacher and parents.
HOW CAN WE MAKE MULTIGRADE TEACHING EFFECTIVE?

• In order to be effective multigrade school, teachers must utilize very


good planning and develop teaching and learning strategies
specially targeted for their classrooms. Above all they must be
dedicated and willing to work hard to overcome the problems and
the peculiarities of multigrade education.
WHAT QUALITIES CHARACTERISTICS SHOULD A TEACHER OF MULTIGRADE CLASSES
POSSESS?

• The teacher is expected to be versatile and utilize different strategies to make


learning meaningful and effective for all students in his or her classroom, no matter
what individual differences may exist among the students.
• The teacher should be able to understand differences between pupils, be able to
motivate them to learn and guide them though their learning materials.
• The teacher should be able to do this for all grade levels in the classroom, no matter
what curriculum subject is being studied. The teacher should not only be a provider
of knowledge but should also be a facilitator of learning.
• Planning is a critical function for the Multigrade teacher. Appropriate planning by
the teacher will result in classes which are more productive for the learners and
easier for them to follow.
