Unit six

Expressions,
Formulae and
Equations
Grade seven
2024-2025
Objectives

 Understandthat letters have different

meanings in expressions, formulae and
equations.
 Understand that the laws of arithmetic and
order of operations apply to algebraic terms
and expressions.

Answers
 In Algebra:
Letters are called variables.
Numbers are called constants.

An algebraic expression is simply a statement written using algebra.

It will contain at least one variable and may contain constants and mathematical
operations.
Example: 3x +y
 Look at these expressions:

4x and 7 are called terms of the expression.

The unknown value (x in this case) is called the variable of the

expression.

The number in front of the variable ( 4 in this case) is called

the coefficient.

And 7 is the constant.

Equation

 An equation says that two things are equal. It will have an equals sign
"=" like this:

That equations says: what is on the left (x + 2) is equal to

what is on the right (6).

So an equation is like a statement "this equals that"

Equations must always be ‘balanced’

We already know that the ‘=’ symbol means

each side of the equation must have the
same value.

𝑎=4
+ +2

2 a 2 4 𝑎 +2¿ 6 2

¿
If we added something to one side of the
equation, what do we have to do with the
other side?
Equations must always be ‘balanced’

If we tripled the load on one side of the

scales, what do we have to do with the
other side?

𝑎=4

How to Solve an Equation

 Our goal is to end up with the value of x.

x = something
To do this:
Isolate x by performing opposite operations.
Perform the same operation on both sides of the equation.
Always start from outside to inside.

Opposite Operations
+ and -
x and ÷
Powers and radicals
Example
 Solve 3x – 6 = 9
Start with 3x-6=9
Our goal is to isolate x. Remember to start from outside to inside.
What is opposite to -6?
Add 6 on both sides.
3x-6+6=9+6
Now simplify
3x=15
What is opposite to multiplication by 3?
Divide both sides by 3.
3x/3 = 15/3
Now simplify
x=5
 Check your answer by substituting(x=5) in the original equation
 3x5-6 = 15-6 = 9

Formula

 A formula is a fact or rule that uses mathematical symbols.

 It will usually have:

1) an equals sign (=)
2) two or more variables (x, y, …) that stand in for values we don't
know yet.
Formula v/s Equation

A formula relating x and y.

A formula relating a, b and c.

An equation with variable x.
